View Full Version : Rolling over
Andrew has mastered rolling over from his tummy to his back. Only now he won't spend any time on his tummy!! As soon as I put him down, before he has even hit the floor, he will be trying to roll over! He also tries to roll over when I am holding him in my lap, or trying to burp him. He is always tipping his head and trying to roll..its really frustrating!
Before he could roll he was doing soooo well on his tummy and could shuffle himself forwards and sideways. Now I'm worried that he wont' spend any time on his tummy and crawling will take a long time now.
Will this change once he learns to roll from his back to his tummy? Will he then enjoy being on his tummy again?
Feel free to totally ignore me, as I am a mother of an as-yet-not-rolling-boy but I had an idea, that I thought I might share ... when your little chap rolls onto his back, what happens if you keep him rolling over, until he is back on his tummy. Of course, I could be completely naive, but perhaps it would work, if you kept rolling him over (not rolling him back, but continuing the motion ... if that makes sense).
I also would not worry about the crawling thing ... as a child (I am not 35) there was no such thing as tummy time, as sure enough, I crawled !! I think there is a certain element of natural development that seems to take over !
As I said ... I may be totally wrong ... just thought I would share !

I could be way wrong on this...
But I thought part of the purpose of tummy time was to help build neck, stomach and back muscles in preparation for rolling, sitting, etc. So, to me, once bub is rolling they've moved onto the next "stage" of exercise. Your son will still get a big work out! The next big accomplishment will be rolling from back to tummy and in trying to do this he's continuing to build strength in his tummy & back, and also learning to coordinate arms and legs (my dd took awhile to figure out how not to have one arm stuck under her and preventing her roll :) )
Also, rolling may just be such a novelty that of course bub wants to practice and impress his mummy :)

My daughter Raleigh (now 5 months) thinks its the best thing since sliced bread to roll around on the floor or in her cot. I think its all part of the discovery process which makes it a novelty for a while I guess :). DD is now also trying to sit up (have placed her in the sitting position and she's using her hands to steady herself). I often wonder where the last 5 months have gone. I've gone from a totally dependant baby to a rather independant 5mo. It never ceases to amaze me how fast time flies.
Thanks guys :)
Not so worried anymore! I do sometimes play on the floor with him and roll him back and forth a bit, just the same as when i was trying to teach him to roll in the first place.
I do like the idea that he is doing it to show off!! That is funny :)
This morning we went into his cot and found he had rolled around 360 and was sleeping with his head (just his head!) under the blankets - what a nutter!!
Things change daily with bubs, they are constantly doing something amazing and different!!

We're experiencing these too at the moment!
And DH and I reckon he's just so happy to discover that he CAN move around, he just can' help it to do it over and over again lol, even when he was dead tired.
So cute!
He's showing off alright, maybe not for us but to himself! Because every time he's doing something new he had the biggest cheeky grins on his face.
Thomas is now mobile! We are in serious trouble now *arghh* LOL
Enjoy! :D

Don't worry too much about tummy time as my daughter never ( i mean NEVER) liked being on her tummy (would scream until i rolled her over) and she started crawling at 81/2 months old. Went from one day not going anywhere to the next day getting around fabulously.

MJ has also started rolling from her tummy to back. She began about a week ago, mind you she's only 15 weeks old  I've begun putting the thing that you use to stop bub rolling in bed on either side of her to make her stay like it, which she does not like.
Well, all that worry last week for nothing! This morning I went in to him in his cot and he had rolled from his back onto his tummy! I was in shock.... He has now done it a few times today.
So now we are back to enjoying tummy time!
How quickly things change.....! :D
