Hi there,

I am 16 weeks preggers and last obs appointment i was told i have no chicken pox immunity at all.I thought i had it when i was young but mustn't have..
Anyway my daughter goes to kindy 2 days a week and hasn't had chicken pox or the vaccination. My obs said it was better not to vaccinate her whilst i was preggers.Recently a few people have said that it is safe to vaccinate daughter so i am not sure what to do now?? anyone have any advice they can share,it would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes you certainly can ! :D

Its a common misconception that you cant vaccinate other bubs while pg the thing to keep in mind is that yes there is a chance that your lo can get chicken pox from the vaccine but it isnt contagious

I'm pretty sure the c/p vax is a live one, so there is a small chance that newly vaxed kids can pass it on. The prob you face is that late in pg it's reeeeally bad to get c/p, so maybe you'd be best to have your DD vaxed soonish so you avoid that danger period (from memory it's bad to get it before 14 weeks and in the last few weeks). Your GP might be able to help you out with this :)

My son had the chicken pox vaccine whilst I was pregnant & he got some of the symptoms (spots etc) & I freaked out. But I did a whole heap of research & found that although they may show syptoms they haven't actually got the disease & it is not contagious & I am living proof. Much better for your sake as well as your DD that she is vaccinated. But of course this is your decision & I wish you the best of luck.

Thats correct that it is "live" so to speak but the great thing is that if a child gets the symptoms etc it isnt contagious so it isnt a risk.

phoebe, if you decide to vax your dd and she got chicken pox, I am pretty sure she would be contagious. i think you should check with your GP or OBS

Thanks ladies,

i had 2 different responses from both my gp and obstetrician,my gp said yes i could vaccinate her and i would be fine and no risk.My obs said no it's better not to,i am 16 weeks and she said chicken pox is more dangerous before 20 weeks and towards the end of pregnancy. So basicall obs said no don't and gp said yes it's fine  not sure where to go with this one...

some of you have said it's a live vaccine,so is this more likely to be passed on (the chicken pox) ?

it can only be passed on if she got the disease.
so it can't be passed on from the vax itself. but she could develop c pox from the vax, or catch it somewhere ( nothing is 100% effective) and then it would be contagious.
i guess it is just weighing up the risks. personally i'd go with advice from the obs (so long as u like and trust them) as they would know more about the effect on your baby.

Hi I just wanted to let you know that I got DS2 his chicken pox vax on Monday.
I had a good talk to my GP and he said that the risk was minimal and if his wife were in my position he would feel content to still vax their child.
PJ was fine only had a slight temp on Monday night, but nothing to up set him. He still slept for 3 hours yesterday!
Good luck on your decision!
