Any suggestions on how you got your kids to use an adult toilet without the insert (eg when at shops, at a friends place). Son is 2 years 7 months and using potty almost consistently at home, or uses the toilet with the seat insert but he is too afraid to sit on the toilet without the insert either at home or while out.. so Im having to put nappies on him when he's out and its causing him confusion..
Hi, I took the potty with me in the back of the car and used it when we were out at friends etc...at the shops I used the "little" toilet in the mother's room. I also found that holding DD on the big toilet helped.

Was thinking of that.. but was then thinking.. well not everyone does that surely?? Is it just an age thing, being scared of the toilet? I feel like he is scared he'll fall in, it cant be comfortable having his little bottom over that huge toilet seat hole LOL

Yeah it didn't last too long, only a few months tops. :) But I refused to put her back in nappies for anything lol, so anything to help her become more comfortable on the loo (ANY loo) was great.

Hi
My DS uses the potty at home (though mainly so he can play with his cars on the edge of the bath!)
But when out will use a normal toilet seat - he just climbs onto it facing the back of the toilet so that his bottom is sitting on the front of the toilet seat - if that makes sense. (Think officially it is called the reverse kanga!) Feels very safe and comfy for him and he can do it by himself. Just need to do a bit of cleaning if he does no 2s.

I used the little fold up seat - kept in a plastic bag in the baby bag. (Cleaned of course!)
This stage didnt last long and now he uses the big loos no trouble - but it did give him more confidence!
I always held my little guys if they needed to use the big toilet. They learned to stand to wee pretty early (big brothers!) so it was only poos that were a worry.

Yeh, my son is only 2.5 years but my sister was saying the other day that alot of people actually teach little boys from the day they can stand to wee standing up.. I mean, it does make sense.. going from nappy, to potty, to toilet sitting down , then to standing up must get confusing. D
One question, did your son have to stand on a stool to reach over the top of the toilet while standing??
Yep. We just had one of those little plastic stools from Target. Wee targets come in handy too. ;) When you are out you can hold them up, or they can use a bush outside. They can usually reach by the time they are about 3.

I bought the little fold up seat for DS but he didn't like it. He actually prefers to hold himself up on a normal seat- which is a real pain because we went and bought a family toilet seat (http://s140.photobucket.com/albums/r34/missie_mack/?action=view¤t=familytoiletseat.jpg)(it has two seats that are held together magnetically. A normal sized adult one and a small one for kids) and he only used the little seat for maybe a month

I just hold DD under the arms and support her if she has to used a toilet without an insert. I wouldn't be putting your DS in nappies to go out - I think that would be very confusing for him.
