Your toad stool is beautiful. You have done such a good job. Great job using the ready to roll icing. It isn't easy. Your Holden badge is awesome too.

Mums that make Birthday cakes Rock!!

Thank you. Ready roll icing sure takes a lot to get use to! The holden badge took me about 4 go's to get it like that lol

My mum always made our bday cakes and that was the most memoral part of my parties! I wanted the same for my kids :)

I got a free kids birthday cake design (http://www.kidsbirthdaycakedesigns.com)from this site last week, I made the Dinosaur for my 5 year old. Their cakes are really cute and I could print of the template and use it to cut out my cake. The instructions said to use a packet mix but I just made my own. I'm not against Mothers that use packet cakes but for a Birthday!

I'm planning on making my son a Wiggles cake for his 3rd birthday in 2 weeks. I'm making a Dorothy and each of the four Wiggles from fondant but I've run into a bit of a dilemma. Their pants are black and for the life of me I can't find any black food colouring anywhere? Does anyone know where I could find black food colouring or how to combine other colours to make black? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :dizzy:

Hi

I made a thomas the tank engine cake for my ds second bday and although I managed to find black food colouring (in woolies or coles) it was next to impossible to make a large amount of icing black and I nearly had to pour the entire bottle  in to get it dark enough. Mind you I was using orchard white icing.

So, my suggestion would be to use the chocolate orchard icing, this is very dark and perhaps add the black colouring to that, or if you are making something along the lines of butter icing make it a chocolate icing and then add the black colouring, I hope that helps :)

Good luck

Hey BenjiisMummy. I am a Cake decorator and would like to let you know that it is possible to get black icing. You just need the right product. If you go to a cake decorating supplies shop in your state they will sell colour gels or concentrated colours. One brand is Wilton but there are others as well. They are the best and come in many colours. Liquid colour will never go any darker then dark grey as mentioned above.

I have learnt from experience that it is hard to get buttercream to go black. It ends up an ugly shade of very dark green for some reason. But Royal or Ready to Roll (Orchard) Icing will go black for you. Goodluck.

I generally get my cakes from these guys: http://www.birthdaycakes.com.au - not sure where in Aus they are, definitely everywhere in VIC and Melbs and hopefully elsewhere as their cakes are awesome!

I had so much fun making them. I forgot to get a good picture of the pig's curly tail; I was so pleased with it! All those hours with playdoh were not wasted...
