View Full Version : Placenta Previa
Just wanted to hear from any other ladies that have been diagnosed with Placenta previa. I had my 19 week scan last week and they have found that I have grade 4 (the worst kind):(. The ob has said to take it easy and call the hospital if I experience any bleeding, and has booked me in for a c-section at 39 weeks. Otherwise he doesn't seem too concerned and only wants to see me again in 4 weeks time. I was wondering who else was going through or had gone through this and what their experience was.
Hi minibar... I had placenta previa and had my csection at 39 weeks. As u said the doc was the same just said to monitor it, go to the hosipital if I bleed. I found out after I had a bleed at 19 weeks... I had played bowling on the wi the day before with my step kids and that started the bleeding. I was told not to exert myself and sex was out. I took it easy the rest of the pregnancy and was ok. Doc told later in my pregnancy that if I went into labour to call an ambulance because if the risk (we are about 40mins from town). But in the end I never went into labour and had my beautiful little girl via the csection.
Just remember not to push ur self to hard, I know I was a total basket case after I found out but all turned out well. Ohh and I got LOTS of scans done towards the end of my pregnancy.
Many of the ladies in the ivf threads have had placenta previa. My doc told me that they think there could be a link with ivf and placenta previa according to some studies.
Take care if yourself sweet and try (i know it's hard) not to stress. At least you know about it and the doc can monitor it.

Hi Minibar
I also have/had placenta previa, which was found at our 19wk scan. OB also told me no sex, no heavy lifting/exertion etc and to call the hospital immediately if there was any bleeding. He was going to deliver via c-section at 38wks. Mine was also grade 4 but it ended up moving slightly, but not to any huge degree that would probably have made much of a difference. Things have changed slightly now as I now have vasa previa and velamentous insertion of the cord, so bubs will be delivered just before 35weeks, still c-section (but we only found this out at about 28wks), but before that when it was placenta previa we were still on normal 4 weekly appts and nothing really changed for us either, OB just kept an eye on things a little more closely.
I also really struggled to get my head around what was happening, but as time went on and I asked my Dr more questions, I became much more at ease with it (no choice really!). And it does seem to be a lot more common in IVF pregnancies, god knows why!
Hang in there, they have found it early which is good and you will be monitored. Just keep an eye on what's happening and if in doubt ask your OB!
Thanks Gilliebean, I hope things go smoothly and you have a problem free birth.

Hi there Minibar,
Belated congrats on your BFP!
I had PP with DS2. I was 41 when I delivered and I had no idea what PP was, except that CS would be my only birth option.
I didn't take it as seriously as I should have taken it. I worked, I weeded, I carried around my 14kg DS1 :ecomcity:. I know now that it is a serious condition - but I expect that if you take it easy and listen to your doctor all will be well.
I went into spontaneous labor at 36wks and went to hospital. DS was born healthy and strong within 4hrs of my first contraction, but the doctor did tell me that I had bled and that I was very sensible (** read lucky **) that I decided to play it safe and go to hospital (thanks to DH :o)
On top of PP I had Gestational Diabetes and both my boys were diagnosed with Fetal Macrosomia (big babies) and both had big heads (DS1 was 9lb 4oz with 38cm head & DS2 was almost 8lb with 37.5cm & born 3wks early ) so the idea of a CS didn't worry me at all.
I hope that you are able to enjoy your pregnancy ... as much as any of us IVFers can ... I was a nervous wreck right through both of mine ... so I feel a bit hypocritical telling you not to worry :o ... :fingerscrossed: this is just a speed bump on the road to :cloud9:
Thanks Lucky, I have calmed down a bit over the last few days and realised that I just have to go with the flow and take it as easy as I can and hope that I can hold onto bubs for as long as I can. Hopefully until 39 weeks when I go in for my caesar. None of this is easy and I guess I would've worried even without this diagnosis.:flowerz:

Mini,
Just thought that I'd mention that right through my pregnancy I had a feeling that DS2 would come early. I don't know why - I felt it from 8 - 10 weeks, long before I was diagnosed with PP. I don't think the PP had anything to do with bubs coming early ... he was just ready to come
