View Full Version : How do I get another scan?

Had my morph scan yesterday, and this bub was no different to my other 2 - came out of there with great head shots but NO IDEA of gender.
I have 2 boys, I'd love a little girl, all the grandparents would love a girl and now I have to wait. I don't want to have to deal with the "loss" of my dream baby at birth if it's another boy and deal with all the newborn stuff too.
Has anyone been through this and managed to get another scan? Drs up here seem reluctant to hand out referrals without good reason and there are no clinics that offer gender scans only. Don't know if possible gender disappointment would come under a good enough reason to request further scan or not :gloomy: Just so bummed about the whole thing.

Hi,
I'm not sure of any places around your area as i'm up in Brisbane but up here i know of a few places that just do the gender scan as well as the 3d & 4d scans which you can setup yourself without a doctors form...
I had my scan yesterday too and they told me it was a girl as she couldn't see any boy bits, and a girl is what i was wanting really bad but i still wanted to 2nd look just to make sure before i run out and buy a million girls things, so i've got my gender scan booked tonight at a place called Miracle Me so if you can find something like that i'm sure you'll be fine and it's only costing me $55 too and that's for after hours
When i wanted a scan i went to my GP who gave me a referal. Good Luck hun :hugs:

Im not sure hun have u had ur 19wk scan? did u not ask to find out the sex? FX u ge tur lil girl
Legs crossed again, Kirst? That sucks!
I would use the gender disappointment argument if they won't just give you another scan... If you have the time to prepare yourself you may be less inclined to experience PND and gender disappointment when bubs is born.
Fingers crossed for another scan, and fingers and toes crossed for a pink bundle!

Last pregnancy I asked for a scan for the same reason and was told I didn't need it. Found out at 37 weeks as bub was breech.

Had my scan yesterday and all the pics ofthe bottom half were pretty rubbish. There was just nothing to see, despite me saying first thing I needed to know gender.
If I had to go to Brissie it would cost a lot more than just $55 for a scan :(
Our DS2 had his legs crossed at the 19 week ultrasound so I booked a gender scan only at the place listed in one of the above posts. I'm not sure how you would go about getting an ultrasound just because but you could try.. Good luck :fingerscrossed:

Maybe go to a different Dr. Just say to him that you had a breech baby and just wanted a scan for peace of mind? I hope you get it :hugs:

Not sure if any of these places take non-referrals, but worth calling for a shot...

I was the same with my 1st. I desperately wanted to know the sex & she was facing the wrong way & kept her legs crossed all through the 20 week scan.
I ended up going to a private ultrasound place around 30ish weeks & paying for a scan just to find out the sex.
Good luck :)

Im sorry to gate crash your thread  but i was just wondering if you get anymore scans in the third trimester?
My last scan was the morphology one and im now 33 weeks, alot of people have said they had one at 32 weeks...i want one!!!
Not that I would ever encourage someone to lie to their health care provider. But if you are having cramps and spotting - they MIGHT do another ultrasound - but you'll also get a vag. exam :(
You can also request another one at 34 w to confirm fetal growth (my Dr. said it is covered).
If you are really 'stressed' out about it or having bad dreams about birth defects etc. I can't see why your dr. wouldn't let you have another scan. It isn't costing the system anything, you'd have to pay for it anyway. Maternal wellbeing is just as good a reason as any.
Where abouts do you live? The ultrasound schoool down the gold coast is always looking for volunteers for their courses too - that way it is free.
Good Luck.

Thanks, but apparently people outside of capital cities don't NEED extra scans

Hi Ladies,
Please make sure that you gender pic is clear enough for you to feel believe what it is...
Monday i was told 99% sure that i was having a girl and was so happy to hear that as DP and i had our fingers crossed for a girl but would have been fine hearing if it was a boy.
After doing an extra gender scan last night as i wasn't that happy with the pics from the previous scan and just wanted to make sure, I was told that it's 100% a boy and i can't doubt this shot

Oh wow. No denying that is a boy. That is identical to my little man's unltrasound picture. I also got the gender scan done at Miracle Me

Turns out the private hospital do 3D scans without referrals!! :smiliedance: $165 out of pocket though, so I'll beg the Ob tomorrow for another referral. If that doesn't happen, I know I have a back-up plan. My parents will be here in 3 weeks so will book it for then, that way mum can come too (and knowing her, would probably pay for it too ;) plus bub will be a better size to see more clearly.
What a relief! And FirstBub - I'm glad you got your scan now before you got too attached to a girl. It's sooo hard dealing with it at birth!

Thanks BazzasMum,
Yeah i don't know how you would of dealt with this at birth, i was a complete mess all last night and got hardly any sleep because of it...
I was just thankful that the lady at Miracle Me was so nice and spent more time making sure that it was a boy so i couldn't doubt it, she also told me that she has had to tell a few other ladies at the 3d/4d scan at 30+ weeks when they had just finished buying everything.
It still sucks though as you’d think that with today’s technology that they wouldn’t still be getting this wrong

Hi Crin - I had a 'Growth & Wellbeing Scan' at 30weeks...BUT it was because my stomach was measuring very small for dates!! (Stomach measurment 26 weeks, gestional age: 30weeks) so it was medically suggested by my OBS i have a scan to make sure DS was ok in there. Turns out hes fine, and growth wise is average, hes just very squished in there!!
I did get rebate back from medicare, the scan cost $300 and i got back about $80.

if you say bub hasn't moved much they will do another scan or like previously mentioned a bleed, i'd wait till your about 30 weeks so you can see the scan clearer then say bub isn't moving much or something like that. That is expensive for the 3d/4d scan, it only cost me $100
I had scans at 9 weeks (dating), 12 weeks (NT), 19 weeks (routine morph), 32 weeks (due to a bleed and decreased movement), 33 weeks (3d/4d scan) and again at 41 weeks
Good luck :)
