Hi all
My DD is almost 8 months old and only last week was diagnosed with Lactose Intolerance. Yes, it took me 7 months of jumping up and down and going to almost every dr in town (literally) to have her referred to a pead and have the hyrdogen breath test done - to confirm she is lactose intolerant.
It's floored me, as she didn't show many signs (or so I thought) of LI. She would vomit after every feed, had bad colic, terrible poos and would be generally very unsettled. But the Dr's all told me this was reflux and NOT LI or anything else. We went through every formula available - literally - From S26 to Karicare to Lactogen to SMA to AR formulas, thickeners, the Novalac range, Goats Milk - our two options left were Lactose Free and Soy. We had tried mylanta, gaviscon, zantac and losec with zero success. Nothing was working, and when she hit 6 months & solids came in, her "reflux" got so much worse. Once she begun having custards, baby yogurts & cheese as well she began to get nappy rash so bad that it would blister and bleed. :(
She is now on Karicare De-Lact & dairy-free and showing signs of improvement - she's been on it for just over a week now. The vomit has disappeared (hooray! no more wearing vomit all day!) and her poo's have become a bit more solid, she's less fussy, and her colic is a bit better.
It's hard to gather a full extent of the De-Lact though because she is currently suffering from bronchialitis which she got two days after starting De-Lact. So of course she is having panadol and anti biotics which could be affecting her poo's still.
I know that LI and CMPI quite commonly go together, so I am wondering if maybe she is CMPI too? Of course there are really no obvious signs that stand out to me, there's a few signs of CMPI that I read and think "yeah... maybe..." but then again, LI didn't stand out to me either and she has it (definitely confirmed - not inconclusive or anything - its an absolute definite).
I'm going to begin the fight this week to get a Dr to listen to me and get her CMPI tested... how do they do this? I would just swap her to soy and see, but I know CMPI babies can react to Soy too and I do not have the luxury of just chop/changing everything, her "father" won't follow my lead on these things unless a Dr has specifically ordered it... (makes my life harder). Anyone got any ideas?
