Nothing about my labour or delivery of heath was anything like I was taught to expect in my antenatel class. The last thing I expected 3.5 weeks before my due date was to go into labour.

On Friday the 2nd June I went to work as usual, with no expectations, at 7am. I had had a terrible back right through my whole pregnancy so when I started to get spasms I thought othing of it & did what i usuallly did & walked in off around the surgery (I work at a Dr's office).

My Boss (also a good friend) kept saying that she thought I was in labour & I should get on of the Dr to have a quick look at me. "No way" I said, still got too far to go, Its just my silly back!..I'm fine. She insisted that I go home anyway as I had worked extra hrs that week & relax, she called one of the girls in & I left for home around 12ish, still with niggling back ache.

On the way home I stopped to do the groceries & go to post office. When i got home I did a few loads of washing &as I had planned the previous week, packed my hospital bag (lucky for that). My back ache started to feel like a little cramp so I decided to do a few stretches...felt much better to the point of no ache at all. YAY!......On going to the bathroom I noticed a tiny faint pink line..like a piece of red cotton...OK maybe I am in labour...but I feel NOTHING....So silly. I rang my OB room & spoke to the Nurse there, told her my day's events & she suggested that I should call the hospital but not to panic as it was early days.

I rang the hospital still thinking how rediculous this all was...I'm not due for another month!.....The Nurse said It best to come in to have a check, pack your bag incase. I rang my Hubbie at work & told him the story, told him nOT to panic I was fine, no contractions just a back ache that had now dissapeared. I would call him if anything happened.

The Hospital was a 40min drive away, I stopped to get phone credit on hte way & pick up some extra pads just in case (again...lucky I did). I parked as far away as possible so I could walk. I got to the Maternity ward with just my hand bag over my shoulder. The Midwife looked at my with the half smile & said "well I don't think we've got much to worry about here hah?!"..Lets have a look anyway. After the list of general questions she gave me 2 panadol for the back ache (non existant now) & poped me up on the bed. She hooked me up to the trace for 1/2 hr...this was around 4.30pm.

When she came back she looked at the trace with a shock & said ...Are you NOT feeling that???? I said What?? Is there something wroung. SHe said, Honey you are having quite STRONG contractions look, and pointed to my tummy which was moving..She quickly told me to undress so she could check me..On doing so she said, with a surprised look on her face...you are not going anywhere..your 5cm dialated!....Oh no....I was supposed to see The Da Vinci Code tonight.....um, oh god I still have a month to go.Ma is in Sydney. I was a little scared to say the least. What if I hadn't have come to hospital? I would be in big trouble tonight!

I rang my Hubbie who was in Coolangatta on a job to ring my Ma (in Syd)...Tell her to get up here. My girfriend came to keep me company while I waited for him to get there. Within an hr I was 7.5cm!!!!....Still no feeling of contractions...I was scared !....I had a plan & this was not the way it was supposed to go...It was great but the not knowing where i was up to was very off putting.

My Ma's flight was delayed out of Syd...Oh NOOO!.....My girlfirends left to go get her from the airport. Hubbie was napping on the recliner...still NO contractions!. @10pm the midwife came in & said...time to break your water honey!....No my Ma isn't here yet!...Did it anyway!.....I had a 1/2 shower, came out & sat on the end of the bed with both feet planted firmly on the floor. Hubbie watching Bog Brother hehehehe. I could feel my contractions now but like a bad period pain, low in my front. The midwife told my the "when you get the feeling in your bottom" speech, i decided to see how long I could go without saying anything. I thinkthere was about 5 or 6 cintractions after I got that feeling before I told her. I wanted my Ma.......@11.30pm she told my to pop up, she checked me & there was my Bubbas head!....@ 11.40am I started to push & my Ma RAN through the door.....My baby was born @ 12.10am.

WOW!!!!!...What a surprise, My OB was amazing she helped me sooo much!....All in all I was very lucky, came away with MINIMAL pain, I only really endured to pain of the actual delivery....can't escape that! hehe. I only tore a little & My baby was a healty 6lb 13oz, 53 cm long with 32cm head. I was so happy my Mum made it...right at the business end where I needed her. I luckily didn't need any pain medication, not that they asked me....All in all very very lucky. I called in sick for Monday@ work!!!!!:p

I think you had everyone's dream come true!!!! Firstly to go into labour 3.5 weeks early with your first, then to get to 5cm and not even know you were in labour. Then most importantly to have a healthy bubby at the end. That's fantastic, I'm so happy for you! Great job, thank you so much for sharing! I hope you are recovering well.

Welcome to the world little Heath!!!:smiliedance:

Congratulations, how lucky are you!

I think the pain threshold has a bit to do with the waters not broken. I remember my contractions before my waters were broken compared to my contractions after my waters were broken. BUT, still I definately felt like I was in active labour before the waters broke too :o

Well done  Welcome little Heath.
