Hey Ladies,

Well my 4 week old twins have silent reflux and have been on Zantac for 3 days. They dont have it sever (as in screaming all day) but they are bad at night and sometimes breast refuse and sputter and pull away from me.

I want to know how effective Zantac is as i have read that Losec is way better and i dont want to start from scratch with Losec after trying for weeks on Zantac etc.

So my questions are;

How long did Zantac take to work?
Was it effective?
Whats the difference between Losec and Zantac?
Did your bubs suffer worse at night?

Hope that all makes sense - i only running on fumes of sleep lol. It really is so awful to see my 2 precious ones like that

Zantac worked for J, as did Losec. They are the same drug just work differently. To see decent results we needed to piggy back them. Not ideal but is do able.

We started noticing a difference around day 4, by day 7 he was a new kid. J is always worse during sleep time & early hours of the morning ie; 1-3am.

Before a feed, try giving 1-2ml of mylanta liquid. Just make sure it's atleast an hour before & after Zantac. Mylanta is my life saver during 1am screaming sessions.

Hi! Congrates on your twinnies! My bub had silent reflux and I had him on Zantec. It worked for us, i found it was enough to sooth his little throat. I am not sure what the difference between the two are but I think zantec is more of an antacid ( someone correct me if I'm wrong) my bub was only on it until 11 weeks and we havnt hadba problem since weening him, he's now 16 weeks.

Yes my bub suffered worse at night, I also found feeding him upright helped as did putting phone books under one end of the cot so he slept on a slant.

I hope you get some sleep soon!! Sorry I'm not to much help but hopefully someone will know more about the differences.

Zantac & losec are the same active drug. One works from the inside of the gut out, other from the outside in. Neither are an antacid.

A lot of people are. Some Dr's don't realise or don't pay attention. Our public pead didn't know till I told him & looked for himself.

Zantac is easier to get into them but losec can work better.

I used Zantac on my DS, who was diagnosed at 4wks with silent reflux. He would sleep for a max of 2hrs and it usually took 2hrs of 15min screams to get him there. The Zantac was excellent, by 10wks he was cured :) by 3mths he was sleeping 8hrs+ a night. I hope it works for you :hugs:

Thats exactly what happens with my 2. How long did it take to work take effect, was it about a week like TT? I hope i have as much success as you ... How did you know when to wean him?

TT did your lil man have it very sever? Did you have to up the dosage with his wieght, like take him back to the doctors every week or 2?

Dot - So glad it worked for you. Hope my 2 are the same.

Miss_N - Im about to do a annoucement thread, hopefully i can upload some pics for ya there ;)

Zantac worked for us but it took a few weeks. Stick with it a little longer and if there isn't an improvement go and see a doc again.

Have you tried gavascone satchets?

I tried all the prescription drugs losac ect....
And non of them helped.

Zantac helped for about 3 weeks.

Then my doctor told me to try gavascone satchets, they worked wonders and once he had been on them a few weeks i got a prescription for the bottled gavascone and was able to buy 1 bottle get the second free pretty much.

Congratulations on your twins :) My bestfriend in in your birth group and she told me about there birth :)
Hopefully the silent reflux doesnt hang around to long. My boy had it horrible he would scream for hours and days. He is 9 months old now and grew out of it at about 6 months (but he did have it bad)

Zantac works for us. For Nick, it took 2-3 days before we saw any improvement. But Mylanta also worked. We used it whilst waiting for our appointment with a paed who then prescribed Zantac.

Nick is still on it but we are thinking of weaning him off it.

J's reflux is that bad it can & does block his airways. He started on meds at 3 months after he stopped breathing at home & spent two nights in hospital.

He started on 5mg of losec & slowly moved to 10mg, than we added 4ml of zantac daily. We've battled feed refusal, food issues, extreame vomiting & weight gain.
It was only in the last 2 weeks his played with DF & let people other than me feed him.
His off all meds now & doing well. Still ha some moments but nothing like he did.

Once reflux kids become more upright the valve/muscle at the top of the stomach starts to work the way it should & build up enough strength to close instead of staying partly open & letting acid out.

There is a light at the end of the tunnle it just a slow road to get there.
