View Full Version : Sunscreen for Babies
Just wanted to know what sunscreen you use for your babies. My daughter is 6 months old and when we go out for walks, her arms and hands are often in the sun. I have been using a wrap over the pram but would like to buy some sunscreen as well.
I have had a look at the chemist and the sunscreens I saw are for "children". Are these ok to use on babies? One said not for children under 12 months and another said not for under 6 months, the rest said nothing.
Or am I better off buying a senstive skin sunscreen?
Any comments?

I have Ego Toddler Milk which can only be purchased from a pharmacy. It was recommended to me, not to put sunscreen on any child under 12 months of age.

This company sent me samples of their baby sunscreen & also their sensitive sunscreen a few mths ago. I have used them both on DD (8mths) without a problem.
I use hamilton Toddler's sunscreen on DD. I tried banana boat and she got a rash from it. My sis and I were both really sensitive to sunscreen's when we were kids and Hamilton was the only one we could use. Their site says not for babies under 12 months, the cancer council says small amounts of sunscreen won't harm a baby. DD is always covered by her clothes, and has a hat on if we're out in the sun so it's only her face, her hands and any part that is showing if her clothes move. I only just started taking DD out though and she's 8 1/2 months old.
Edit - That sounds really bad that I only just started taking DD out. I mean to places where there is 0 shade. We have had a couple of picnic's on the beach lately cause the weather has been warm enough to be outside.

There is one that you can buy that is all natural products.....bit expensive though....
I too was recommended not to use sunscreen on my son, and if i do don't use it everyday, as there is not much know about the effects it can have on their skin........
I now have Banana Boat Baby Roll on Sunscreen, it's SPF 30+ with uva and uvb protection...and it's for babies 6months or older...non-greasy, 4 hour water resistant and is fragrance free

we use uv natural sunscreen. i asked my gp before i used it on ds and she said there was a bit of controversy over whether uto put sunscreen on babies. on one hand u get told to cover up in the sun or kids shouldnt be in the sun but if they dont go in the sun they can be deficient in vitamin d something i think. ive used it when we spend more than 5 mins in the sun since ds was 3 months old and my doc said do what u feel u should. good luck

Oh...........how funny - I just bought some of the Banana Boat 'Baby' roll on sunscreen tonight. And I didn't even check what it said about using on babies less than 6 months old.
I just had a look now & it said to 'consult your Doctor before using on babies less than 6 months'.

I use UV Triplegard for Kids. It's SPF 30+, water resistance for four hours and it has a hight UVA spectrum. We have a small roll for the nappy bag or large bottle for home. It's what the Famliy Daycare use. Smells good and not greasy.

My DS suffers from eczema and has really sensitive skin.
The only sunscreen he doesn't react to is the "sun sense" toddler milk.
I have used it since he was 6mths and have never had any problem.

The one mypaed recommended, even from before 6 months, is Sun Sense Sensitive . I'm pretty sure it's Sun Sense anyway, white tube with purple square on it and costs around $20.
I just kept DS covered until he was over 6 months as I wasn't so keen on putting sunscreen on.

I also use the Cancer council sunscreen, it's easy to apply as well in a roll on bottle. My DD 2.5 helps to put it on DD 6mth.
Very cute
Plus the money is going to a good organisation rather than a muti national co.

Have you tried the Avado Organics baby sunscreen? A bit expensive but certified organic and no allergic reaction.
I use the cancer council toddler sunscreen with no problems.
