DD is 8 weeks old and has been diagnosed with Silent Reflux. She had all the symptoms but was not terribly troubled by it until she reached the 6 week mark. We have been prescribed Zantac which did seem to help with the pain but she is still horribly congested and can barely breathe around 2-4am every morning. I called the pead back about this and he prescribed Losec but I don't see how this will help with the congestion?
Has anyone else experienced this horrible congestion in their reflux bubs and if so what can be done about it? I have been using "Fess" but that only helps her out for a minute or 2 and then she is back to being completely blocked in the nose and starts gagging and screaming :(
I am reluctant to give her the Losec when the Zantac seems enough to control the "pain" of the reflux but I really want to find a way to relieve the early morning congestion as it's so scary hearing your little one struggling to breathe.

My DD was exactly like this and that is how we ended up seeing a pead and getting it diagnosed. Losec has helped us ALOT!
Also, if you haven't already raise her bed.
When my DD would have a really bad moment (mostly in middle of night) all we did was pick her up, hold her upright against my chest and just rocked her/walked her around for 5 mins or so until I could hear her breathing get better. Luckilly it only happened once or twice per night.
She is now 19 weeks and has been on losec since 5 weeks, and we don't have this problem anymore.

My 7 week old son has reflux and is on Losec AND he is horribly congested in the early hours of the morning.
My doc said it was a symptom of reflux and there wasn't much I could do about it.
I did go out and buy a vapouriser in the hope it would help but it hasn't. I don't know what else to do about it either.
Sorry I wasn't much help...

Glad I'm not the only with this problem! Everytime I mention the congestion to the pead he just says "that's the reflux" but he never suggests how to solve the problem!
Jackia - so your son's congestion has become better since being on the Losec?
JandJ'smummy - I also hired a vaporiser but it did nothing!

Lillyjack, I cannot praise losec enough, I was so hesitant to put her on meds but she is now a different baby!
Everynight she would make choking, gurgling and congested noises many times throughout the night, and after perhaps 2 to 3 weeks of being on losec she is a silent sleeper and she's so much happier!
I don't think vaporizers would do much as it's caused by the reflux, it's like if you have ever had a drink and choked or coughed that you feel it up in your nose - you just have to give it time to feel better. Or maybe I'm the only one who has ever had that happen to me lol!!
I hope it works for your little one :)

Thanks for your replies! We pick up the Losec on Wednesday night so hopefully that will make a difference. I realised that she probably doesn't get the congestion during the day as I put her in a bouncer to sleep. I tested the theory and laid her in the cot during the day and sure enough within minutes she was sounding very snuffly again.
:fingerscrossed: the Losec changes all this!

The losec should be a lot more effective than the zantac. The only other thing could be what you are feeding her , reflux and cow's milk intolernace often go together, so even if you are BF her the dairy in your milk could be causing the congestion as well.
Hope this helps, it does get better, I have been through it twice.

Losec & Zantac are the same drug just work differently. Losec works from the outside of the gut in & Zantac from the inside out.
We found we needed to piggy back them for DS.
Losec tablets also worked far better than a liquid.

NycHey I have 6 month old twins who have been on losec or omeprazole since 6 weeks. They seemed to be getting better and have been off the meds for 4 weeks until the nasal congestion got so bad that has outweighed the other reflux symptoms, so they are now back on. I found infant fess hopeless and the one that works the best is nasa mist by neilmed its not specifically for babies however is safe for them. its much better at getting in there and we use the little blue snot suckers you get with fess little noses to suck it all out. yum

3under2 - thanks for the tip on the nasal spray stuff! I think I'll give it a try... willing to try pretty much anything at this stage!
Ahh yes, the blue fess aspirator is great for that but how disgusting is it :footinmouth:
Yes and unfortunately you cant buy the little blue suckers on their own...
good luck:wave:
