Please, I really need some advice about why my bub might be waking ready for a play at 1am!?!?!?! I don't wanna feel like mean Mummy again but I don't know how else to handle this!? PLEASE REPLY if you can! :(

For the last couple of weeks my 8 month old wakes up at 1-2am (like clockwork, it's amazing) - he cries and whinges until I come in and then GIGGLES and kicks when he sees me!!! The problem is I don't know how to handle this... I've been doing shush shush and leaving again but it just seems to be getting worse and last night it took him 3 hours to get back to sleep!! :crying: It was a horrendous night! But I don't think he was actually in pain/upset about anything cause whenever I came back into the room he was happy as larry. After 2 hours of this (tried feeding once and he wasn't hungry either, offered water and changed nappy) I ended up leaving it a really long time before going back in and then felt like the worst Mummy in the world for letting him cry that long :( (even though I still think it was only a protest cry).

I don't understand because I have been really careful with how I behave with him at night and I have always done the shush shush and leave again while he's still awake. I very rarely pick him up (unless it's feeding time) so I don't understand why he thinks I will now? I'm always subdued and don't play with him or make too much eye contact so I don't get why he thinks it's playtime... HELP!

By the way, at the moment his bedtime is 7pm (out like a light) and he normally feeds at 10pm and 4/5am, waking at 6:30am. The nightfeeding is a whole other issue, have tried to night wean him several times but no luck! His daytime sleeping is very variable but pretty okay I think, usually two short and one long nap, never past 5pm.

He's crying for attention. He now knows if he cries, you'll come and play. So it's up to you. You either leave him to cry or you go to him and possibly prolong this playtime behaviour. Maybe just go in, check if he's ok, give him some water, a quick hug & back to bed?
