I was catching up on reading our Sunday Mail last night and by chance caught a brief mention that "soon parents in Australia will again have the chance to gender select their babies through IVF". Apparently an 'ethics committee' are meeting later this year.

I am wondering if anyone else has heard about this, and if anyone knows how to go about commenting on the review?

Sorry love Don't know how to comment on the review.

I think it's a good idea but I also think theyd have to have strict criteria in place and as long as people cannot access the Medicare rebates on the procedure. That's my opionion on it anyways.

Hey Kribby, thanks for pointing me in the direction of that thread and information - glad I didn't post it in the 'news' section!! I haven't been around BH for a while, but find it's always a good source of information!

Do they currently allow gender selection when it's in the best interest of the child, ie when there is a family illness that only occurs in boys/girls?

Luvmyboys - yep!

From article in another thread:

The use of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is allowed only in cases where parents have serious genetic diseases that can be passed to children of one gender.
But a five-year moratorium on the wider use of sex selection expires this year. The National Health and Medical Research Council is about to consider opening up the practice so parents can choose the gender they prefer, or to "balance their family if they have children of the other gender".

Hi all, I just have to remind you of two points to keep in your heads when posting in this section:

1. All unsupportive and off topic posts will be deleted. Gender selection is a highly sensitive and controversial topic, and gender disappointment is very real. As this is the gender area of the forum, we only encourage supportive posts.
If you feel strongly adverse to the discussions happening in here you have two options- the first being to start a new thread in perhaps the social issues area where everyone with any opinion is free to comment. The second is to not come into this area.

2) I have had to edit some posts referring to another BH member. Please, please remember that the rules implicitly state that any discussion referring to a BH member past or present is seen as gossiping and may result in you being infracted.

Thanks for your cooperation
