Hi, just wanted to know if anyone else had fixed/delt with this problem. I am currently BF my nearly 6 mnth old & want to start giving some formula, when I did this yesterday she choked:( .

Is it the type of teat I'm using or is it the formula??? Which should I change too? Any advice would be great.
Thanks

My little girl does this as well. She also screams her lungs out the moment she tastes it . At least she has the last few times. She is also exclusively bf. I think the choking is because the formula apart from being a different taste and pretty horrible at that .lol . .its a thicker consistency as well and like heavier/fuller. Im not sure how to fix it. You could try different teats. I know my little girl I have tried a few different teats to no avail. Even with water or diluted juice she hates anything out of a bottle. Its really odd. Then yesterday my mum bought a little cup thing that says from 4 mths old and has some weird valve type thing in it. Its like a sippy cup for toddlers but smaller. And what do you know. She'll drink anything out of it. its hilarious.

Hi..at 6 weeks of age, I had to start giving my son alternating feeds of BM and formula, due to him not gaining weight.... Well I used NUK, slow flow teats for babbies between 0-6months.....and used them until he was 7 months as the other ones flowed too fast...even though he has drank out of a cup since 4 months........a sippy type one....no back flow..

Occasionally my son would cough and splutter a bit, but I think it was mainly due to the fact that is is a thicker consistency....

Hope this has helped you some what....Goodluck

Hi,

Its because it tastes revolting, when compared with breastmilk.

Do you have any particular reason for introducing formula at 6 months, as you are obviously a competent Breastfeeder and introduction of formula is associated with decreased supply along with various health complications for bub and yourself.

Goosie22 i love the work that you do helping mums with breastfeeding.. but that statement there is just not on.. are you trying to make altmum feel guilty ? :shame:

KarniFool,

Nobody can make altmum feel guilty, But I would suggest the people who apply patitudes such as Happy baby = Happy Mum should feel guilty for not truely supporting altmum to find the best way for her (with all the facts).

Altmum - It could be that she doesn't like that particular formula.. when it comes to formula feeding it's all trial and error to find the right one that your baby likes.

With teats you can get one's that suit the flow of what your baby wants.. it's called a variable flow teat.

Or she could be gulping on the air thats coming through the bottle. Avent is great for stopping this.

By mimicking the form and function of a mother’s breast, the Avent teat has been clinically proven to reduce colic in the newborn. Its soft wide shape encourages your baby to open their mouth wide when feeding and to literally 'latch on' to the teat. He or she can then suckle, using the same movements of the tongue and jaw as when breastfeeding. This makes it easy for mum to combine breast and bottle feeding, as they are so close, your baby will easily go from one to the other and back.

The Avent teat has a unique patented skirt system with a one-way valve at the base of the teat which flexes to allow air into the bottle, replacing the milk at your baby's own suckling rhythm and eliminating the vacuum. Allowing your baby to feed continuously, as at the breast and not have to come up for air. The whistling sound you hear is your guarantee that air is going into the bottle and not into your baby's tummy. Its the air that babies swallow while feeding that can cause discomfort, crying and fussing associated with colic.

I hope this helps in some way.. Goodluck :hugs:
