View Full Version : Comfort item - does your bub have one?

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if your bub has a comfort item that they sleep with or not?

A lot of the sleep books suggest that you should introduce a comfort item, like a blanket or soft toy, so that bubs have it nearby when they wake and they can cuddle it to re-settle and go back to sleep.

If your bub has one, did they decide on the item themselves and how old were they? Or did you introduce it yourself and how old was your bub when you gave it to them.

My bub has trouble re-settling during his day sleeps (massive cat napper here!) and I'm thinking about buying a comforter to introduce to him so that hopefully he'll cuddle and snuggle into it when he wakes and can re-settle to sleep.

my older two never had anything and DD2 has a white teddy that she isnt seen with out! lol she is how ever good at daycare she will leave it in her locker but there if she needs a cuddle.

my older two would settle really well and just didnt care for a comfort item so im sure you bubs will lead the way just have something there for them either way

The first 2 never had toys or blankets, but dd1 had her dummy. Ds was just a pain (said lovingly) he just wanted to snuggle into my boobs to go to sleep

Dd2 got attached to a Minimink bear that I bought her when she was about 5mths old. I bought a spare one when she was 12mths old, for the fear of losing one and her not going to sleep. Now she has both bears - one is called 'Dirty Bear" as its the one she had first and looks worn, and there is "Clean Bear" the newer bear. She wont go to sleep with out both, but if she wakes during the night she can comfort herself with the her bears.

Its worth a try ;)

Hi ,

My DD1 only attached to her dummy but that was just for bedtime and in the car. She gave it up herself at two (put it in the bin one day and never asked for it again!).

DD2 is a thumbsucker and became attached to her flannelette pillow case the winter she turned two. She doesn't carry it around not but will still snuggle it at bedtime.

DS, well, he is also a thumbsucker when tired and at bedtime. He took a fancy to a teddy he was given at birth but we lost it before I could find a second to swap between the two unfortunately. We found another teddy that he seems happy with though, he plays with the satin tag so it seems as long as it has a longish tag and is lightweight he's happy to take it to bed.

I wish you luck finding a 'lovey' for your little one. I believe it really helps them settle for sleeps.

DD1 had a winnie the pooh blanket that a friend bought me while i was preg and she had that till she was around 5 then decided she was big enough to sleep with out it, DS has a few teddies but isnt overly possesive of a particular one, DD2 has a few bears aswell though she changes her fave every now and again, i have found them a big help with my kids and ive also heard of some kids becoming so possesive that they will not go anywhere with out their fave toy,

Its worth a try if bub is that bad of a sleeper during the day, it cant make things any worse

None of my kids have had a comforter as such (DD2 is a thumb sucker so she has that but DD1 and DS have nothing...no thumbs, no comforters, no dummy, nothing) and I'm glad. I've heard too many stories of comforters being lost and the baby/toddler being hysterical and unable to go to sleep without it. It's just a drama I'd rather avoid personally.

yeap, we went through that and it wasnt pretty esp as one night he wouldnt sleep without raffy and nothing else would make up for him

My 2 eldest kids had a sheet they grew attatched to. They don't have it anymore...I have the tiny remains of both sheets in their baby box :)
My youngest dd isn't attatched to anything (was a dummy, but that's long gone now) and my youngest son (3) loves to have his radio on to go to sleep.

Thanks ladies - sounds like a comfort item is a good thing to try. And I'll make sure I buy two of the same thing so we can rotate it.

Hi

My DS is obsessed with blankies. Any blankie for that matter, as long as its either draped over hes eyes or nuzzled up against hes cheek and over one eye he is happy ! If he had it hes way he would sleep with the blankie over hes entire face it must make him feel secure. Still does not stop him from catnapping (re - my other thread, thanks for your reply by the way !) , but it definitely gets him off to sleep . During the day I only allow it as he is supervised due to only wanting to sleep in the pram (pain in the bum !) as I worry about it hindering hes breathing even though really Im just being paranoid as its too small and light to do any damage (ie - suffocate or strangle him) ... Night times if he needs it to nod off I remove it the second hes asleep.

Good luck , i think anything up against their cheek or face makes them feel burrowed in and safe !

Ever since he was a week old DS has become attached to his "ba"...his terry towelling nappies we used to use to wipe up little vomits and dribbles :p.

He is 3 in August and still will not go to sleep without ba (which I think he named after the noise a sheep makes because the terry nappies are white and fluffy, or used to be!).

He takes it everywhere  in his bed he has his two dog beanie toys, his ba, Spot, big yellow duck and a beanie rat toy.

yep this. He never had a dummy or had any need for comfoters. If he needed something he used my boobs. If he's sad he tries to squeeze my breasts but he's 2.5, no longer breastfed and goes to bed with no dramas and we never had to dummy/bottle or toy wean. I hated the idea and was so releived that DS didn't attach to anything. I really hope the second is the same because I too have heard horror stories of lost comforters.

MG, my only experience with comforters was one my DD discovered herself, when she was probably around six months old. We had one of those air wrap things around her cot and she used to stroke it until she went to sleep. It was great, because it was the same material as her travel cot so it was like we always had her comforter with her.

The funniest comforter I've heard of is a friend's little boy, who likes to sleep with a flannel across his forehead. She even has to take one to the shops with her, so he can have it on his head to nap in the pram.

I refuse to use a dummy. Absolutely hate the things, hate the way they look, hate the impact they have on growing teeth...

I prefer Lukie having his terry nappy because even though he puts it in his mouth and carries it around like a puppy it is something that doesnt cause any problems later down the track.

Dd has two, blankie (a small square of minky fabric backed with satin) and Billy which the creepy doll off saw :o he use to be dh's but dd took a shine to him and now at almost 11 months old she won't do anything without him besides bathe. He is beside her 24/7, she will scream and cry in the bath until he is where she can see him, he sits at the table at dinner time. 99.9% of pictures of her have him in them somewhere, my ILs hate it.

I think a terry towelling nappy is a good comforter though, easy to replace, easy to wash....if you're going to have a comforter that's the type to have

LOL it gets sooo gross though :p I replace it daily (he has 24 of the damn things!!) but he has a runny nose and keeps wiping with it so I am chucking them in the wash every 5 or so hours haha.

When I told him all the things he was giving to the new baby (like his cot, some baby toys) he was all fine with it but did have one request, "no no no not my ba!"...okay bubby dont stress lol. So we will have to buy a whole new lot for this baby!

That's my dd2! Only I re-directed her hands so now she sucks her thumb on one hand, other hand inside her own top rubbing her own nipple
