View Full Version : Questions for all the twin mummies out there.
Thought I'd create a place where soon to be twin mummies can ask the experienced mummies questions... It might be just me asking but I'd really appreciate any insight/ answers.
Ok my first would be how many of you had natural births vs c-sections?
And also how many weeks were you when you gave birth?

Congrats! :yelclap:
I have 13 month old mono/di twin daughters. They were born at 35 weeks after a very stressful pregnancy which resulted in me being hospitalised for 8 weeks due to TPL at 27, 30 and 32 weeks. I was induced but they came 9 hours later via emergency c-section.
They weighed 3lbs7oz and 4lbs2oz and spent 3 weeks in a SCN. They both had NG tubes for 2 weeks aswell as being breastfed, spent 3 days in a humidicrib and only one twin needed CPAP and was on it for 2 days.
They are now happy healthy little girls, who have reached all their milestones with no problems and I couldn't be prouder of them :)
My cousin had twinnies last year, boy and girl. Born at 38 weeks via c-section weighing in at 3.5kgs each. Babies needed a teeny bit of oxygen but were fine otherwise. Mum and bubs were discharged 3 days later.

I had ID twin boys on November 8 2009, both delivered naturally! :yelclap: It's sometimes hard to find an obgyn who will deliver naturally..but well worth it in my opinion. My boys arrived during spontaneous labour at 35 weeks ( a tad early) and were both 5pd 4oz. They spent 2 weeks in the special care nursery until they could fully feed from me because they hadn't yet developed the sucking reflex. They will be 7 months next week and I'm still feeding them! :smiliedance:
I'm more than happy to field any questions anyone may have, just PM me.
cheers, Michelle

Congrats on your twins!! It takes a bit of time to get your head around it (mine are 12months old and I STILL gaze at them in wonder sometimes!
There was a thread a while back that has lots of delivery stories - hopefully that will help with your first q! http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=329310
Mine were natural, spontaneoous labour. It took just over 1.5hrs at 35weeks. DD was first, then DS (who was breech) flipped straight away and was born 22mins after her. BH had been happening for ages, and labour started at 32weeks, when I was put in hospy on bedrest for 3weeks! Painful, but they gained heaps of weight in that time. DD was 5lb 2oz, DS 4lb 15oz. (2.2 & 2.1kg) SCN for one week (had steroids at 32weeks when we thought I might deliver) and then home.

Hi and congrats on your twin pregnancy.
I had a c-section at 36W, 3D. I had a very challenging pregnancy and had pre-eclampsia for the last couple of weeks. Bubs were 2.1kg each and spent two weeks in special care before coming home. They are now 14 months and are perfectly healthy, gorgeous bubs!
My twin boys were delivered naturally @ 34w5d after I went into spontaneous labour (apparently my ob is one of only 5 in Melbourne who will deliver naturally). I had to have an epidural but was able to move around about 2 hours afterward. My boys weighed 5lb4oz and 5lb5oz and stayed in SCN for 13 days, with naso gastric tubes for 11 days. They went home earlier than expected because they responded better to breastfeeding than to the bottles the staff were giving them. I'm still fully breastfeeding them an they're gaining heaps of weight.
Hi I had a natural delivery at 38+2 with induction. The labor only took 5 hours. They weighed 3.2 and 3.4 kg... Twin 2 needed a quick puff of oxygen...but they were both great no stay in scn..came home with me 4 days later.
Thanks for all your replies it's good to know that there are quite a few natural births as this is what I'm hoping for. I am pretty open minded though as I know it depends on their position.
It really changes alot when you go from thinking you've got one bubs to two!! I just can't think of anything else!! Lol!!
When did you ladies finish up work? I'm a retail manager- always on my feet. Will need to give as much notice as possible.

hi, im a twin mum, and my daughters will be 29 in a couple of months. I had undiagnosed twins, and I delivered them naturally at 37 weeks. My ob thought I was having a bigger baby, not two babies. 5lb 7oz, and 4lb 7oz. cot rested for 24 hours, then started breastfeeding. We took about one month to get established, but then I fed them for nine months and weaned them onto a cup, no formula, no bottles. I also never once used a disposible napppy, terry cloth nappies which I had to wash and fold, and attach to bub with safety pins, was pretty much what everyone had to do in the olden days. Glad to answer any questions about the last century, good luck, Marie.

Wow you are wonderwoman!!
Conratulations on your pregnancy Bubs4Me, get ready for an amazing experience!
I have fraternal boys, they were born via c section at 36 weeks, one needed assistance to breathe but recovered very quickly, they were 5lb5oz and 6lb3oz, they were in scn for a few days and had nasal gastric feeding tubes, and one was under lights for jaundice.

New Question - Today after sitting down for an hour or so i stood up and the hole lower part (belly button down) of my stomach went completly numb for about 5 minutes - like i mean numb as in i couldnt feel anything i even tried pinching myself there but couldnt feel it and walking was rather difficult as my hips sort of froze over aswell?
Any ideas as to what this could have been?
Freaked me out a lot
Thanks in advance
Has it gone now?
Probably twinnies creating pressure on a nerve somewhere...as long as your hips aren't frozen constantly...run it by doc at your next visit if coming and going...good luck

I had Identical twin girls at 35 weeks after going into labour on my own. I had no contraction pain just felt a little sick they think it's cause one of my little angles was sitting up in the middle of my rib cage ... I had them naturally with an eppy ( i recomend an e ppy) after less than an hours labour 7 mins apart... They weighted 4.1 and 4.8 pounds. They stayed in Hospital for 2 and 1/2 weeks. There now 10 month olds and I love them so much. Treasure ur time being pregnant girls trust me when they come out time just flies by next thing u no u will be celebrating there first birthday!!!!

So good to hear all this thanks everyone!!
DH & I have 1 DD 9 yrs... always said we'd only have 1, maybe a second when shes 7 or 8, but probably not. 12mths ago we decided it was time to have another child. I work in childcare & love children, but with no family closeby, both having to work & the cost of childcare etc, have always thought w would be best off with one. So, after 6 mths of TTC, we fell pregnant in March this year. At my first U/s 2wks ago we found out that we are having fraternal twins, due on Nov 27th. When we saw 2 bubs come up on the screen instantly, we were all in shock! even the dr! hed just finish telling us that even though I was quite large for my dates, it could'nt be twins as there are no twins in my family! I cried & laughed!! OMG!!! The thoughts that constanly rush through my head... everything you think of is now different as theyre are going to be twins... how do you feed & burp 2?? how do you settle 2 crying babies?? how do you pay for your petrol with 2 bubs to carry in your arms!!??
These last few days i have cried on & off all the time. Today we put a deposi on a new car & dh was quite stressed about the whole situation. its just so so surreal!
ok sorry im blabbing... theres just so much going on in my head & no-one seems to understand. how did you ladies feel?? am i normal???

Hey girls!
I just had a couple of questions and concerns.
I had my 32 week ultrasound today and both girls are doing really well! Both about 5 pound already. However Lefty, the presenting twin, is bum down and has been since the last scan at 28 weeks. Righty is head down.
So what I want to know is any tips on how to maybe get her to turn. Also my Obs was saying that if she doesn't turn, we will need to book in for a caesar. But not going to do that until 36 weeks at the next scan and the caesar wouldn't be done until 38 weeks!!! Holy cow! How will I get to 38 weeks?? I am so scared about everything going on now! Would love a natural birth again. What are the odds of making it to 38 weeks with twins without going into labour??
Any tips and advive would be greatly appreciated!!!
How long you can sustain the pregnancy for completely depends on the pregnancy you have had so far.
I can only speak for myself- I had no issues during pregnancy whatsoever- had a sechduled c/s at 37+3, but I really see no reason why I couldn't have made 40 weeks without going into labour. Apart from some very minor braxton hicks in the evening, my body showed no sign of going into labour otherwise.
38 weeks sounds like a reasonable gestation to me- esp if you haven't had any complications. :)
As for turning the presenting twin... from my knowledge I would have to say it's not looking good. Space at 35 weeks is very limited, and it will depend on where the second twin is positioned etc. My twin B turned head down at around 28-30 weeks and it was painful. So painful I woke from a deep sleep and had to sit up and stop myself from screaming. And I have read stories on BH about women with a single pregnancy having an ob or someone manipulate their baby in the womb to try and turn it and they all say how painful it will be.
Charlismum (now with a new username I think though :)) had a natural birth... and gosh I can't remember 100% but was one of them breech? Hmm... can't remember but I'm sure if she spots your post she might be able to tell you a bit about her birth.
Goodluck with it all anyway! It's nearly all over, and 3 weeks really isn't very long at all!:hugs:

Its a 50% chance either way of making it to term or going early. You will get really uncomfortable in the last few weeks but you will be fine.
There is a website called Spinning babies that gives you tips for turning babies. I had a breech twin a and even though my Ob tried to stay optomistic about him turning, he admitted at the end that it is very unlikely as there was just no room. In saying that though, Twin B turned during my 30th week.
They can turn Twin B but Twin A definately needs to be head down.
If you do go into labour or feel contractions, the earlier you can get to the hospital the better. I did at 29 weeks and again at 32 weeks and they managed to stop it both times and I went through until they were evicted at 37 weeks.

My bubs kept flipping heaps, but stopped at around 30weeks. Twin A ended up being head down and B was breech, so the better option when having one breech twin.
Definatley check out spinning babies, as even though there is less room in there, it is still possible. A friends single bub turned from head down to breech at 38weeks, then back to head down at 40weeks. No reclining, and on hands and knees - lots! lol, doesn't sound like fun, but the recovery from a natural birthis generally so much easier than a c-sec.
Totally agree with what Nomsie said about getting closer to 40weeks, depends alot on the pregnancy. I had both my single babies at 36weeks, so didn't hold out much hope of going to term with twins. Braxton Hicks started around 16weeks, and often by 25weeks, pre-term labour at 32weeks meant bedrest for 3weeks until I convinced the OB to let me go home, and 3days later I was in labour again, and out they came. Get lots of rest where you can to help keep them in for longer and to grow them bigger!
