I am just wondering if anyone has made their own nappies before. My mum and I are looking into making them for DS1 & DS2. Just wondering if you have made them what fabric combo you used.

If i could sew, i would try. But i can't so i won't :) I think you would need to source some hemp if you wanted to make anything better than one-wee cotton nappies. Good luck with it though.

I'm like O's mum - I find pocket nappies aren't too hard to make, but I wouldn't attempt fitteds without a good overlocker (which I don't have). :)

I don't have an overlocker but my mum does. But she goes away tomorrow for I have no idea how long. I am going to try and make some. When I get the right fabric my mum will be making them. I know where to get all the fabrics from. Just need the money to do it.

I made all my own, gave me something to do while pg. I downloaded a pattern for free from a website (sorry can't remember which one) traced it on paper and made it smaller for newborns. I bought flanelette material and experimented with the soakers, tried folding cheap flannels in thirds and also using 6 layers of flanelette, both worked fine, the flanellete was easier to sew in place. They look exactly like fluffies but nicer because they are coloured with little bears etc. It worked out to about $3 per nappy once I bought the velcro. Out of 2 metres of fabric I could make 8 nappies. I also put elastic in the legs. Google some patterns and see how you go. As long as you can straight stitch on a sewing machine anyone can manage it.:)

Also what I WISH I did was include a waterproof lining, you might want to think about including.

If I use the covers( I have 5 coming from BBH) I shouldn't need a water proof lining.
Also do I need to overlock terry or flannel? My mum has gone away and has taken her sewing machine and overlocker with her. So all I have is my sewing machine.

If you get a pattern where you sew the nappy inside out I think you'd be right - all the raw seams would be on the inside then so should fray too much. You might want to consider using hemp or another more absorbent fabric for some nappies - I have some flannalette ones that really aren't up to the job now that DD is a bit older - I have to boost them with hemp. :)
