View Full Version : Cradle cap treatment
Can anyone recommend a cradle cap treatment for a bub with very sensitive skin?
Johnsons baby oil has worked well to control her cradle cap before but it causes her eczema to flare up. :crying:

brushing the scalp with a soft baby brush a couple of times a day is good to losen the dry skin. be careful what you use.I have found QV wash and simular from chemist are best to wash hair and body and use the same brand moisturisers. also slightly warmed olive oil is good to massage into scalp and left over night them washed out the next day if it's bad.

Baking soda and water....it works really well and Baking Soda is usually very gentle on the skin.
Would recommend a *patch* test somewhere first though if your bubba has sensitive skin.
Oliver isnt great with any of the bath products either, but the baking soda works really well for him!

Good old olive oil works a treat and it is so gentle. If you have any other oils such as sweet almond, apricot or wheatgerm oil, these are great too. You don't need to spend a fortune on medical based applications to get the best results.

Try Dermeze. It's developed by the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. Being in Melb you should be able to find it easily in most pharmacies. I'd moved to Cairns from Melb a few months back now and found that not all pharmacies sold it here as opposed to Melb.
It's pretty greasy stuff but it helps with the cradle cap and is excellent for the ezcema - so you're killing two birds with one stone. My GP in Melb recommended I use Dermeze for the ezcema but I found that it loosened the cradle cap too. It comes in a pretty big tub so it'll last ages.

I too recomend the olive oil. My DS had pretty bad cradle cap and i used olive oil after his bath, left it over night then used a soft baby brush the next day to brush the loose bits out then wahsed his hair again, worked a treat cleared it up

Olive oil is just the best isn't it!!!
I just rubbed moisturiser on bub's scalp then brushed all the crusty bits out later. Rinsing bub's hair with clean water (ie not the water in the bath) helps stop it coming back.
Thanks for all the great replies
I tried putting warm olive oil on her hair last night and this morning the cradle cap easily brushed away!
Thank you to all :yelclap: :yelclap: :yelclap:

Cradle cap is not harmful to your little one so I would do no more than brush the hair or maybe put a little olive oil on it. Putting products on your baby when it's no nessecary can only cause problems. Cradle cap might not be attractive but it probably doesn't bother your baby a bit. Save your money!

DS1 is 4.5yrs and still has a bit of cradlecap. He hates getting his hair washed. :( DS2 is 2.5yrs and also still has cradlecap. He is also another one that hates getting his hair washed.
I feel like a bad mum. I have tried baby oil and olive oil. But how often should I do that for?

Cradle cap is like eczema and unique to each child as far as treatment is concerned so unfortunately its trail and error til you find one that works for your child
For my DD it was shaving her head (with little clippers) and as she was only 4 mnths she didnt have a great deal to start then smothering the scalp in dermeze. The shaved head meant I could then just gently wipe off the softened crusts with a warmed facewasher which eliminated the irritation from pulling at the hairs while pulling off the crusts. Also no hair for the crusts to bind to made them smaller.

my 2 year old still gets CC. i just use olive oil the day before her hair is due to be washed (usually before a swimming lesson). Its annoying when they have hair. sometimes I wonder if I should just leave it alone.
When is it classed as dandruff and not cradle cap?

I'd suggest tracking down some Little Sunshines Shampoo - it was great on both our kids. Apparently it contains Fumaric Acid derived from fruit - my local health store has it - or you can get it from various online stores - cheers, Marcus.
Woah..nearly got sucked into an infomercail there..
Olive oil and a nit comb (gently)...best way to go :):):)

:) You can relax Oilbottle I'm a confectioner who works with fruit acids - I think Gita would have gotten the infomercial award!!! What's the active ingredient in Olive Oil? I'm assuming you'd need a strong extraction?

I think you will find that a baby who has eczema and cradle cap will probably continue to have scalp problems forever, in our family psoriasis and eczema seem to go together. I think it gets labelled as dandruff when it is actually more of a "cradle cap" like psoriasis.
There is a pharmacy in essendon (Melb) which makes a great lavender balm which cleared up our daughter's eczema and has helped with scalps too, cannot think of the name sorry (worth googling though).
Glad the olive oil has helped in the meantime. Be careful of bubble baths etc in future too, once you find a wash that doesn't upset their skin I'd stick with that.

my DS has got cradle cap and eczema too, and would react to the salicilate acid in the cradle cap solution sold at the chemist.
in the end, dermeze works for us, but we still have to apply it regularly.
he has got megathick scales, and we have tried to leave them on as his skin weeps when it comes off, except the scales started to smell really fishy!
Ladies, for those of you who have older kids (4.5 and up) with a cradle cup.
My friend has a daughter this age and she tried lots of things and it did not work till someone mentioned to her that it would clear up by an anti dandruff shampoo, she is using it now and it is working.
She started to use her normal shampoo and when it comes back again she is using anti dandruff shampoo again a couple of times and it goes away for a while.
There are some mild shampoos that can be used for children.
Hope this helps.
