Hi,

For the past 3wks my son has been periodically vomiting and having diarrhoea. I have had him at the doctors twice and ED once and they all have said it's a tummy bug. But since it's intermitant it just seems strange.

He's not down or lethargic, he's the same ol' 2 1/2 yr old we all know, running around and causing mischeif but just every now & then he will vomit and have diarrhoea. After he's finished either he's off again. :barf:

His vomiting I have found of late is mainly at night when he goes down and the diarrhoea is mid morning to mid arvo. He vomited twice last night, he finely went to sleep round 2.30 this morning and he has had 3 very very runny nappies today all the time being his chirpy self.

I have introduced sultanas into his diet recently but have found nothing on the net about any allergies or reaction to them. No-one else at his day care has similar problems. I'm wondering if he's started to be lactose intolerant, it seems strange that after 2 1/2 yrs of being on formula, cows milk and yoghurt, he can start being affected.

Can a child become lactose intolerant later in life?

Does anyone know or heard if this can happen? I'll check out the net but just wondered if anyone knows.

Thanks in advance

you can definately become lactose intollerant later in life, i did at about 16!

I wouldnt look particularly at Lactose intollerant, although symptoms can vary greatly I thought that they normally happened within a certain time of eating/consuming something containing lactose. For me it is within 20-30 minutes...

You could always put him on Soy or Lactose Free milk and see how he goes..

good luck

you can become lactose intolerant or allegic to anything at any age the body needs to be exposed to the thing its allergic to enough to build up a reaction to it if that makes sense.
its taken my body 20 years to give me a reaction to dustmites (asthma attacks)lol

i went to high school with a girl who was allergic to sultanas.she was anphalatic (sp?) to them.

Lynda- I'm interested in this also- Ronan is just over 2 and has been on toddler formula as cows milk made him vomit- not all the time, but every now and then. Huge quantities of vomit. It's never happened in the 9 months I have had him on toddler formula. I can't have him on toddler formula forever though!
He doesn't seem to have a prob with yoghurt...
I don't know if this is lactose intolerance.
How does one find out? Have you found anything else out about your Son Lynda?

I haven't found anything to suggest he does have Lactose Intolerance but he would vomit about 1/2hr after his bottle and then have dirrhoea the next day. The only thing I have done different since my first post is not give him his bottle laying down, he hasn't vomited since, tho he still has runny nappies and he does complain of a sore tummy every now and then.

He seems to be able to have yoghurt, icecream or custard with no problems.

I'm getting to the point maybe it was just a tummybug and he's just slowy getting over it as I said he still complains of a tummy ache but hasn't vomited for a few days now.

I did read that you can get tested for Lactose Intolerance, may be an idea for Ronan.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

you can get a stool test done to determine if they are lactose intolerant. i myself am lactose intolerant i was one of the kids that "grew out out" of it but my intolerance comes back really bad when i am preg lol but i am no where near as sensitve to dairy as my ds1 is ic an handle small amounts of dairy where as he cant have any.i was a soy formula bub from 2 months old and when i turned 2 i suddnely could handle dairy lol now i'm 20 and i know exactly what my ds goes through.

I just can't imagine what people go thru if they are allergic to a certain thing. I love my dairy don't know what I'd do without it.

Could it be some sort of reflux. Reflux usually is worse they are fed laying down. All the books say that reflux babies should feed and sleep elevated.

Maybe if you tried some reflux medicine on him for a couple of days to see if it improves???????

Hope you get some answers soon as it can be so frustrating to know that something is not right but no-one will listen to your instincts.
