My little Chase really didnt want to come. He was due on the 11th of July and was induced on the 19th, finally arriving on the 20th at 5:15 pm.
i went into hospital at 4pm on the wednesday (19th) afternoon. still had not been having any contractions, any shows or any water. at around seven a doctor and a midwife did an internal to see if the cervix was open at all. the doctor couldnt even find the cervix cause it was so posterior. it was nowhere near 'ripe'. they put in the first lot of gel at seven and said that they would be back around midnight to do another internal. the gel was real uncomfortable and chase had to be on a heart monitor for an hour to see how he was reacting. they came back at midnight and the gel had done nothing, so they inserted another lot and put me back on the heat monitor. i was starting to feel a bit of pain and i really wanted to go to sleep so they gave me a sedative and some painkillers. how do you sleep the night before your first child is to be born? it wouldnt have happened without the drugs
at 6pm they woke me up and told me to have a shower, then a new doctor and midwife came in. they were the ones that would be delivering my baby. they did another internal and luckily the gel had worked a little and the doctor was able to break my waters, which completely freaked me out! i cried lots. it was then time to go into birth suite
once in birth suite i had to get a drip put into one hand, because i still wasnt having strong or regular contractions. i had never had a drip before so i was a little scared. once in they started saline and syntocin which bought on the contractions quickly.i had to have to be hooked up to the baby heart monitor because a late ultrasound had showed that he had the cord around his neck.because of this i had chosen to have an epidural because the risk of c-section was so much higher and i didnt want to have to be knocked out for the birth of my child. i am a single mum and chase's father wasnt at the birth so it was important to me that i was able to be awake and look after him strait away. so my labour wasnt able to be active. i was on the bed, breathing through contractions. chases heart rate was really high, so they didnt let me have an epdiural strait away. they let me have pethadine though, which didnt really stop the pain but helped me to relax between contractions. evenutally they decided that they werent going to caeser and let me have an epidural about 12. i only had a mild one so that i could still walk and feel my feet. my midwife made me get up and go to the toilet a couple of times and part from that i just went to sleep, waking occasionally to change position or talk to the doctor or midwife.
they did an internal around two and found that i was fully dilated and his head was starting to move down, which was very suprising being i hadnt felt anything. they told me that we would start pushing around four and to rest until then. i had a top up of epidural. chases heart rate was starting to drop during contractions so they were a bit worried but decided that he was ok because it was coming up quickly after contractions.
at four they came in and set up the room for babies arrival. the bought in the cot and told me about pushing. i still coulnt feel anything, which quickly became frustrating as i didnt know when to push. i got up set really quickly because i couldnt feel anything and didnt feel like i could do it. i pushed for awhile and he didnt move. they put me up on my knees over the back of bed but i quickly tired of this cause my legs were too weak. i started vomiting and crying and got very distressed and pretty much gave up, so they got the vacuum out. the epdiural was starting to wear off b y then so i could feel some mild contractions. they had turned down the syntocin drip, and my contractions slowed right down, so i was waiting for one to push and none were coming!! they turned it up again and put in another one and the contractions started again. after a few pushes with the vacuum his head came out. i didnt feel his head but i felt his shoulders come out, and then all of a sudden my baby was in m arms!!
the cord was around his neck twice, so they loosened that and they let me cut the cord. he was all purple, but i thought he was gorgeous. he opened his eyes and looked at me and then started yelling. i spoke to him and he stopped crying and just made little noises, because he knew my voice. it was so beautiful, a moment i will remember forever.
the doctors told my friends to take him and told me that i had a 'little tear'. i was looking at the baby and not really worrying. all of a sudden, i felt someone pushing hard on my uterus and i felt alot of pain. my other doctor had come to my side and had started to put a drip in my other hand. i didnt know what was going on and i was yelling at them to stop. i really wanted my baby back too. i was getting very distressed so they explained to me that i was loosing blood and they needed to stop the bleeding and that as soon as it stopped they were taking me to surgery. they topped up the edpiural and gave me the gas. i was devastated to have to leave my baby - i didnt really care about what was happenng to me!! my doctors got the bleeding under control and theatre doctors and nurses came in and transferred me into the theatre. i had lost about a litre of blood and didnt really know what was going on. i was feeling very sick and confused. they gave me a spinal block and some anti nasueant medication as well as a light sedative in theatre and i went strait to sleep, waking up just as they were finishing sewing me up.
i had 3rd degree tearing and lots of sticches. my uterus started contracting eventutally and the bleeding stopped. they said it was tired from so many hours of active labour. all i wanted was my baby
it was 8pm when i got back the ward. i had drips coming out of both hands and a catheta and i couldnt feel my legs and i was very dopey the midwife laid me on my side and put my baby on my breast and i gave him his first feed and really got to see him. he was dressed and clean. he was 8 pund 6 (3800 grams) and 51 cms long with a head circumference of 37 cms. he was perfect - he still is! i didnt name him till the next day but thought about it alot over night. i decided on chase because it is a stong name, meaning hunter, and he will need to be strong throughout his life. his second name is Jesiah, meaning 'my god is my salvation', which for me he definately was in the physical sense, and i hope for chase, that he is in the spiritual sense.
it was traumatic and i am still getting over it. have suffered with a bit of post natal depression and post birth trauma, but he is all worth it! my beatiful baby boy is worth any amount of pain and i am so thankful that he is here safe and sound.
thanks for reading!
