Does anyone know what the difference is between a white onion and brown onion?
Some recipe's specifically request a white onion:confused:

Brown onions (and red ones) have a slightly more 'mellow' or sweeter taste - probably most noticable when you eat them raw, like in salads. In cooked dishes I doubt it makes much difference.... or at least I don't think so :)

Yeah I think its just because the can be specifically used for different things. Like red onions are usually for salads and stuff, and brown onions are for cooking because they are a lot more pungent. The white onions are just in between i think, not 100% on white onions. To me I just buy the cheapest too... :D

dont worry everyone... im a chef and im NOT horrified :laughing: yeh basically red ones raw and for salad.. and brown and white doesnt REALLY matter which one but they are used for cooking.. white ones are slightly sweeter and brown ones have the strongest flavour and are generally the cheapest.. to be honest none of the kitchens i have ever worked in even bother with white onions.. we just use red for salads and brown for everything else..

The only time I use white onions is if I'm roasting them. They come out sweet without an overpowering onion flavour. You can taste the difference when roasting a white or brown onion.

I use red for salads and i prefer white for cooking though they cost a lot more but i do use brown onions as well i like white ones a bit more
