VOIP - Voice over Internet Protocol

Hi

Bit much for this time of day I know but just wondering does anyone use VOIP to contact their family in the UK? If so who do you use and are they any good.

DH (IT geek) tells me that with our modem "the world is our lobster" and we can use any of the providers out there, so I have been given the job of scouring the internet to see what I can find out:eek: A quick search has revealed that you probably need a masters degree in IT to work it all out, they even do a "dummies guide" to VOIP :sleeping:

Like anything new technology wise it will all seem baffling at first, but once you get the hang of it - piece of cake :) Which ISP are you planning to get it through? The help desk people should be able to talk you through it, that's why they are there afterall :yes:

My uncle uses VOIP instead of a landline phone, he seems pretty pleased with it. A cheaper (free!) alternative in the meantime is the voice chat function of most messenger programs. I've used it successfully with yahoo and msn.

Which ISP are you planning to get it through? The help desk people should be able to talk you through it, that's why they are there afterall - Thats just it we can use any of the companies out there so its "just" a matter of working out who offers a good service for competitive rates.

I'm not so worried about the "setup" geeky IT boy can do that:D

We're with iinet, as is the above mentioned Uncle who is a professional Geek. Hes pleased with them. www.iinet.net.au Their broadband/dsl packages are not bad. They do DSL2 as well, and if you are in the right area, the speeds are fantastic.

- Ah yes but I find its a bit like having a plumber for a DH - and always having a leaky tap. Last to get a p.c., last to get broadband etc, etc:D

My husband is in IT and says look up 'SKYPE'.

We are heavy Skype users and are constantly calling Australia, NZ and England from China. Great connections and it's free calling computer to computer! Saved us a heap of money :yelclap:

We use skype, the only problem is with it being free... you end up talking for hours and going to bed really late! BTW It's pretty foolproof coz we have managed to use it!
