someone in another thread posted this....
'I have a few questions that Im hoping you may be able to answer for me. I guess first of all, is it common for ppl to not be approved to be carers?? This is something I really want to do and I am worried we wont be approved. I cant think of any real reason, I mean any criminal checks will be fine, we're parents already...what are some of the reasons that we may not be approved.'
This is something I'd really like to hear other people's thoughts on. I want this so badly, and would be interested to know what can disqualify or prevent someone from being approved as a carer.
thanks..!
I can't see any reason you wouldn't be approved. They sometimes don't like sending kids to you that are the same age as yours (if your kids are 0-3, they'd try and send older kids)... there's not really any reason they'd not approve you if you are caring, sensible, warm people :)
And to add to my above comment, I would LOVE to be a foster carer, however due to not having enough room I haven't applied as yet. Waiting til we move to a bigger place :)

It really depends on a few things. It could be your house wasn't clean or safe enough. There was enough space and privacy for the child.
Your physical health and emotional health isn't in check. How you preformed at your training, if you finished the modules accurately.

They do look pretty fully into your history and your beliefs on parenting/discipline etc.
I was surpised in the amount of detail that was gone into and some of the questions are a bit uncomfortable ie: were you abused/ smacked etc.
But I suppose they just want to know what your experiences were growing up so they fit you with the right child and you aren't too affected by any situation.
I have't heard of them not accepting anyone who went through our training. There were all sort of people.
Did you go ahead and apply?
We fostered for a few years before having our own bub.
It was hard, crazy, amazing and fun.:)
Good luck.

i have thought about foster care many times over the years. I have a car that can only fit 3 seats in the back, we have three kids, and we can't afford a seven seater car to carry an extra child around. does anyone know what happens in that situation?

Why don't you contact a foster agency you are interested in and ask them. In our experience they really tried to provide equipment we needed ie:cot, car seat etc. A car is another matter, it shouldn't be the only thing that holds you back? They are really desparate for carers.

yeah, i should at least find out what happens in that situation. we have the room.
i would be naive enough to think that if i tried to get a baby to foster, the baby would be less damaged by its own family. do you think that is the case too?

:yelclap: i want to be a foster carer too! but i have to wait :rain: honestly i find it ridiculous that despite being willing to do the training, being home alot now as i have my own small children and having the room im denied because of age... i hear the radio campaign requesting foster carers as they are *desperately* in need and they just make me angry now... if i failed something of the criteria fine but to deny in this day and age STS to me seems ridiculous...
good luck with your application its an amazing thing you're doing there are so many kids who need families to belong to and people to love good luck
