Hi look I need some advice asap please. My son (10 months)has for the last 24 hrs had a temp between 38 - 39.7. Panadol brings it down to 38 for awhile. He hasn't eaten today but is drinking well. Not sleeping but not distressed. What do I do? Do I see a doctor or just wait it out?

I personally would see a doctor - for piece of mind.
Just keep his fluids up!
I hope he gets better soon.
Err on the side of caution and take him to hospital/ doctor. Best not waiting til night time when everything seems so much worse. Get peace of mind of now, he could just be teething but you never know.

As a doctor will tell you a high temperature is a marker for an infection, whether it be viral or bacterial (unless of course it is just teething) My son had a temp of 38.5 at lunchtime, I gave him nurofen, he had a sleep but when the temp returned at five pm (39.3) I took him straight to the doctor who checked him over and discovered tonsilitis and prescribed an antibiotic. Good luck, and I just realized (der) that this is prob way too late...
Hi
I hope bubs is starting to come right again now.
I would go with your gut instinct, if you feel that everthing is ok then it probably is...I think as mothers we generally know when something is seriously wrong with our precious children.
I personally dont medicate fevers at all (except obviously in extreme cases) as i actually think they are a good sign that the body is doing what it is supposed to...raising the body temperature to kill he bug or whatever. I generally find that shortly after a fever comes on, they start to improve dramamtically if it is just left to do its job.
The main danger would definately be dehydration but if bubs is drinking well then thats a great sign. Stay close and give lots of TLC - thats the best medicine:) Do what you think is right, see a doctor if it will ease your mind but never doubt your instincts as a Mum!

Hi thanks all. I took him to the doctor last night. Turns out he has roseola virus on top of an ear infection he has had for a week now. Temp hit 39.9 last night but doctor said usually a baby will only convulse if the temp rises from normal to high within minutes. He said that due to the fact my sons temp had remained between 38 - 40 for 24 hours as long as he is drinking then there isn't much risk.
Thanks everyone
Glad to hear all is OK and hope he is on the mend :)

My 14 month old has had a fever (up to 40 deg) for just over 48 hours. I took him to the GP after the first 8 hours who checked him out and sent him home saying that it would just be a virus but it was too soon to tell what.
He's drinking heaps and nibbling at some food (he had a bit more for dinner tonight). With nurofen, his temp stays just under 37 for about 7-8 hours at a time, then rises back up. Just this afternoon his nose started to run and his fluey cough started. Hoping tonight we might see an improvement in his fever. If not, back to the GP in the morning.
Apart from that, he's happy and cuddly and very playful.
Has anyone experienced a fever that has hung around for 2-3 days ?
Hi,
www.cyh.com.au is a great website for anything you may need help on including temperatures. Also, maybe you could find out if there is a parent helpline for general advice. When I lived in Adelaide we had a helpline 24hr 7 days and it was BRILLIANT.
Yes a few weeks ago my daughter had a high fever which lasted 2 1/2 days. I took her to the Dr after the first day and turns out she had a cheast infection.
A few months back I had an unknown virus which was so bad I ended up in hospital for 5 days, with this I had high fevers for 2 weeks, a good day was when they could get my temp under 39.
Hope your little one feels better soon

Hi this roseloa virus my son has got is generally a high temp for 3 - 5 days. Most children will get a slight rash 24 hours after the temp goes down - the rash usually will only last 12- 14 hours, but many kids don't get the rash. If a rash does come out - it will not be on the face or neck - if it is it may be more than roseola.
Apparently its going crazy at the moment. No treatment just lots of fluids and lukewarm baths.

I took my little one to the doctor again today and it looks like he's got an ear infection plus the flu, plus I just noticed he has his first molar coming through !
He's on antibiotics for a few days but at least his fever has started to drop back already !
