Hi Guys,

We bought one of the leading brand Nappy Disposal Systems before our daughter was born, thinking it was a great idea particularly as we have a double storey house where her bedroom is upstairs to save us having to go to the outdoor bin downstairs.

When reading about the system it advised that you can expect to go through approximately 1 plastic cassette per month. These cassettes are fairly pricey at about $18 each. However, by the time my daugher was 2.5 months old, I found that we were on about our 7th cassette! So it seemed really that we were having to buy a new cassette about every fortnight, and this was mostly newborn nappies too.......which are only going to get bigger as she grows, and then the cassettes get even dearer as you buy the ones for babies 4 months plus.

So I have stopped using it for the time being as I'm finding it quite expensive. Have others found this? How do you dispose of your nappies without having to go to a bin outside everytime? For the time being we are just putting wet nappies in a nappy sack & using the disposal system as a plain bin (stinky nappies straight to the bin outside)........which is OK for now but I'm thinking it will get a bit pongy in summertime

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Don't really have any comment on the nappy disposal system as we have never used one. At the beginning I just bought a swing top bin for nappy disposal and we keep it in the bathroom. It has never been a problem with smell. I just empty it every day (otherwise it does get stinky). For number 2's, we put the nappy in one of the diaper bags before disposal, they help with odour control. Number 1's seem to be fine unbagged! Every few days, I spray the bin with undiluted pine-o-clean & let it soak for an hour or so. Seems to work a treat for us - and obviously a much cheaper solution.

We just bought a lidded plastic bin line it with those wavetop tie bags (these are citrus scented too) and keep it next to the change table in DD's room. We put all the dirty nappies into one of those little nappy sack bags (cost about $5 something for around 200 I think?) and then chuck it in the bin. It's not stinky at all except for when you open it, it is a teeny bit whiffy but nothing terrible and the smell goes when you close the lid. The bin takes us a week to fill up and then we just take the bag out to the big bin outside.

i recently saw an ad for a nappy disposal bin that just uses normal bin liners. so you could ask at your local baby shop or something and see if they now the brand. i didn't take much notice really. i just use a flip top bin and bag up the poo's and then empty it often.

you do not have to switch to the next cassette at four months, it is just a con to get you to buy more i think, they recommend it for weaning babies, but the weaning recommendations are to introduce solids at 6mths, not 4mths.

Hello, i have one of the nappy disposal system. Yes, we are onto our 4th cartridge i think, and we have only been using it for 5 wks! Two tips i can suggest are first of all, do up the nappy in a tight bundle (use the tabs to secure it), this will take up less room. The other thing is how far down are you pushing the nappy into the bin? I noticed DH was pushing it right in, it only needs to go in till the clips catch it, then you can turn to close the bag off. They still do use a lot of plastic even then. :)

I bought one of those tommee tippee ones. Complete waste of time and money. It didn't keep the smell in like it said it was supposed to. The bin stank even though I washed it out, i couldnt get rid of the smell od pooy nappies. And the cassettes were far to expensive.

I bought a Tommee Tippee one when I was pregnant with DD, and have to say that I love it.

I never went through a cartridge a fortnight, not even when she was newborn.

I only ever went through maybe 5 cartridges a year. I still use it with DS, and still dont go through many cartridges (I only buy 2 at a time, and only a couple of times a year). Ours keeps all the smells in, etc. Have never had a hassle.

That said, I might be one of the lucky ones, I know lots of people who hated them.
