Can anyone recommend a sling for under $40 that they would recommend. I saw that Big W have a Tomy one that looks pretty good, has anyone ever tried it though?

id go with one of the slings off ebay :)
I wanted a baby bjorn but couldn't afford one so tried the Kmart brand one that looked similar ($25). It was supposed to fit newborn to 12kgs but I was having trouble doing it up when DS was 7kgs. I ended up making a tube style sling for about $10 with a pattern off the internet (and love it!) but the Chickadee ones from ebay are supposed to be good and I'm pretty sure they are about $30 - this was what I was going to get if the homemade one was a dud.
Good luck!

Thanks, might have a look for Chickadee.
As I grow really big babies, I want something that will be easy on my shoulders and back. I have a Snugli one and I used it once with all 3 and I was in agony after only 2mins, so I never used it again.
DS is 4 months and nearly 9 kgs but have found the homemade sling to be really comfy!

Oh cool, where do I get one?? Both my boys were 9kg at 4mths, so I will definately be after something like that!! Looks super comfy in your avatar for both mum and baby.
I got my ring sling from www.hipbubby.com
It's brilliant. And cost about $40.
The structured carriers like the Tomy one you're talking about aren't all that good for bub's crutch, so best to consider something a little more fluid, like the fabric slings.

check out http://www.carryingaway.com/
also maybe google, home-made baby sling, easy to make and use
i would steer away from any carrier type Bjorn or Tomy, not good for bubs back and also directs too much blood too the groin. a wrap sling or pocket sling might work well for you
happy slinging

Okay - glad I found this thread - I bought a Snugli one second hand and have found it hurts my shoulders - I've decided that I need one that fits snugger to my body. I never had one with my son, but have decided that a sling is the way to go with a two year old in tow with a newborn.

I have one of the cheaper cross-over ones. It was fine whilst bub is small. DS is now 7kg and it hurts my shoulders to carry him.
This is the pattern I used

it might be a bit late, but ....:)
i loved my babasling when bubby was little- GREAt
later i fell in love with the hugabub
and now i have a backpack carrier from kathmandu

i agree- if you are talented, you might as well sew your own sling...

I want a babasling so badly but can't afford it new. We tried one at the parenting expo and it was great!

I made a wrap style sling, it is so comfortable. I bought about 5m of t-shirt jersey material and then cut it about 60cm width. No need to sew anything as jersey won't frey.
It cost $40 for the material - and I have enough to make another sling or give it away to a friend. There are instructions on the net for the exact measurements and how to tie it up (looks difficult at first but is actually really easy).
It is very comfortable as it has full back support, I still carry my 9kg 8 month old in it often.
It is similar to the Australian one called Hug A Bub or has the same philospohy to the Baby Bjorn but no buckles.
Good luck

A friend told me about one called the ring sling or something...anyone ever used it?? She said they are only about $30.
I can sew, but I can't read patterns and I'm not that crash hot at it....things tend to fray or fall apart, lol. So I'd rather buy one...for baby's safety, lol.
I ended up getting a bubzilla sling from the expo.
It fits bubs to 15kg, but knowing how my son is at 2 and 12.5kg, I can't imagine carrying a bub in a sling much beyond when they can walk - it has to be walking holding hands or in the pram.
So far I've worn my bubzilla to sweep floors, hang out washing, do washing up and do the weekly shopping. My little girl just seems to fall asleep when I have her in it.

i have been interested in getting a sling but after looking at some of the options mentioned am focused about which would suit me.
what's the best choice, a pouch sling or a ring sling?
i want a light weight fabric for the warm weather and something which is secure. any suggestions?
I had a big bub and struggled carrying in pouch for to long periods, I got the baby bjorn as i guess i was the easiest to use to clips and off and away, some of the other where just to confusing BUT I would have strained shoulders and neck, tendered to end up holding ds up with one arm anyway but still used it alot as my ds loved to be carried around all the time, second time around i might look into a sling. My ds also didn't like lying across arm liked been upright so he liked the pouch, I didn't!
