I have bleeding nipples after I started to express for the first time tonight, as a top up for the night feed. I am conditioning my nipples but am finding myself so full and uncomfortable and leaking alot. My milk came in about 3 days ago.
1. How long until you don't feel as full as baby is only feeding off one side at the moment he is 6 days old.
2. What to do with bleeding sore nipple 9Left side) how lonw do I not feed of it till and how long till it heals? I think it is cracked at the base of the nipple. I didn't bleed last time with my first son.
Thanks for your help, I am really trying to perservere so any help would be appreciated.

Hi there
you could try hand expressing in a the shower to make it not as painful if you are full.Have you tried a nipple shield for when you feed this will protect your nipples until they are better. Also there is a special cream to use but i cant remember the name mayby someone else will know:o
hope things get better for you soon:fingerscrossed:

Lasinoh cream, from the chemist is the absolute best and fastest way to heal it.
Believe me, I tried every other remedy under the sun before someone told me about it (after months of suffering) and they cleared up in a matter of days
Btw, you can use it when b/f and it does not affect the baby.

Hi,
Firstly, if you feel you want to keep feeding from that boob it will be fine and heal while you feed as long as you have your positioning and attachment down pat.
When you positioning him, try to have him face you (have his body in alignment at all times) wrap his legs around you and have his shoulder about midline (between you breasts unless you have large breasts) Hold him behind his shoulders not the back of his head . Line his nose up with your nipple and trace a line down his nose across his lips and express a little milk while you do it. When his tounge pokes out and his mouth is wide open bring him to your breast, dont lean to him. try to make sure you hold your areola far enough back so he can grab on (the pigmented bit around your nipple) in a C hold with thumb at 3 o'clock and pointer finger at 9 o'clock shape your nipple to the shape of his mouth so its easier for him to grip on. check that his mouth is wide open when he is attached (resembling special K trade mark) His cheeks are not dimpling.
If you can get the idea from what I have discribed it might help tonight, but I would suggest you get some Lasinoh and see an LC or go to your local ABA group when you can.
HTH:)
For the full boobs you could try breast compression while feeding to help empty the faster, if its venous engorement try cold compress or cabage leaves when not feeding. Dont be tempted to massage when not feeding or expressing same with heat as it will increase the blood flow to your boobs and compound the problem or engorgement.
i had badly cracked and bleeding nipples with my first bubba and i rested the worst boob for one feed. i was still in hospital and i used their electric pump to express that breast and then fed her off the less sore side.
getting the atachment right is the key. it is sooo frustrating to keep trying to get them on and then having to take them off and try again but it's worth it to avoid damaging your nipples anymore.
if you can get someone to watch you feed it could really help, sometimes they will notice something in the bigger picture that just needs tweaking and it can help attachment.
sue cox explains attachment well if you can get a hold of a book of hers and so does breastfeeding naturally, the aba book.
good luck with it all

I agree with all the PP's; not much left to add but I found when my nipples were cracked and bleeding that expressing a little hindmilk at the end of the feed and rubbing it gently into my nipples helped the healing process immensely. Let boobs airdry too - bubs wont mind!
Breastmilk has amazing healing powers - I have sprayed it in DD's eye when she had sticky eye as a newborn and rubbed it on the scratches on her face and it works wonders.
Ask your MCHN if there is a Lactation Day Stay near you too; they were great for me and I stayed there all day until I got attachment right and feeding became pain free.
