I'm a Jehovahs Witness, and I will raise Oliver as one also, but I do belive that it is up to him to make it his own when he is older.
You cant force someone to belive something they dont.

Hey just a question......is Christian Catholic? I'm just curious...alot of people say they are Christian, and I never really knew what it ment..... (please excuse my ignorance!)
In that they are followers of the teachings of Christ, yes they are Christians.
Catholic, Anglican, protestant, Church of England, JW and a myriad of other faiths are 'sects' (for want of a better term) of Christianity.

I am a Islam/Muslim. There are ppl however been quite surprised when I say I am a Muslim! They would expect like what they see and hear frm the media.
I try to do the religion as close as i could, but then, of cos at times, i missed to do it. And now, the Ramadan /fasting month is coming. I am so looking forward to tat. I only feel like this when becoming a parent. When I was younger , it was only like a 'so-so' feel.
Anyone here a Muslim too?

Yeah, that pretty much describes me too!
I also chose "Other", although I was raised Presbyterian (so not really on your own there, porridge!) but religion was never really a huge topic in our household. Apart from a few visits to church (and an excrutiatingly boring Sunday School) when we were very young, we never even went to church.

Not trying to educate you :D but the catholic churches i've been exposed to (was raised catholic) are a lot more progressive than you might give them credit for, particularly with regards to sex, homosexuality and a basic acceptance that it's perfectly ok for people to adopt different religions as it suits them (or none at all). In fact, I find them to be a lot more open minded than a lot of the Baptist-type Christian groups.
i suppose it all depends on your experiences.

Atheist here :)
Note that it's possible to be agnostic and atheist (or any other belief) at the same time.
Weak agnostic: I do not know whether gods exist.
Strong agnostic: It is impossible to know whether gods exist.
Weak atheist: I have no belief in gods.
Strong atheist: I believe that gods do not exist.
Given that the existence of YHWH (as defined) is unfalsifiable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unfalsifiable), I must perforce take the strong agnostic position. However, given that I believe that it's simply untrue, I am also a strong atheist.

Hmm.
"Baptist" is actually quite specific - lots of churches do the whole baptism thing, but I'd be careful about identifying with Baptists unless you mean to. Many (most?) baptist churches have a particularly strong evangelical / charismatic flavour that isn't many people's cup of tea, and you could give an unintended impression.

Athiest here. Although I don't want to push this on to my dd. I think she has the right to make up her own mind just like me!! When she is old enough and asks questions, I'll send her to her great grandmothers!!
Mischeif,
My husband works with a jehovahs witness. It must be a hard religion to follow! We live in a small country town and I think they cop a bit of ****, which I think is unfair. We are all entitled to believe in what we want to believe!!

I don't push my beliefs on my kids either, but DS1 decided he was an atheist too ast the age of 6. He couldn't work out why God would want him to almost die by not having working kidneys and ending up really sick as a result. I didn't try to change his mind, but I didn't try to reinforce his decision either. As a result, he asked to be excused from scripture at school (which I don't think should be taught in a public school....but that's a whole other topic.)

onelittlegirl - Its not really hard to follow....As a teenager I felt very restricted, I didnt go out clubbing or drinking like my work friends...and although I had a boyfriend I didnt go out alone with him. I must admit I did find it very hard....but as I look back I realise what a great protection it was to ME, goodness knows what I would have gotten up to if I hadnt felt that I would dissapoint God. :o I think maybe I would have been a little troublemaker and caused mum a few grey hairs. Now as an adult I appreciate everything so much more.
Yep, it is hard, and we do get alot of flak, but its mainly from people who dont know or understand us. Most people get a big suprise when the subject of religion comes up and I tell them I am a Jehovahs Witness....I think many people expect I should have had an extra head and a bible in my hand to bash them with....but its not like that at all. We are just normal people, we belive in the bible...just like most other *mainstream* religions do, and we try our best to follow Christs example.
Anyway...enough from me, I'm not trying to *preach*, was just explaining. :)
Angelkisses - I'm really sorry about your son, the poor little man must have been thru such a tuff time. :( Such a brave little boy!!!

I am a Christian, and I attend an Anglican church atm to worship :)
I believe I was also baptised into the Anglican Church.
Mischief just wanted to try and explain a bit about Christians and different churches to you for a sec, because you still seemed a bit confused :)
A Christian is someone who has asked Jesus into their hearts, repented of their sins and who wants to live their lives in a way that please the Lord.
Now there are many Religions that are Christian. Catholisicm is a type of Christian religion, as is Anglican, Baptist, Pentacostal etc, all preach from the Bible, its just the way things are taught in each one that differs iykwim? So I could say Im Pentacostal or Anglican, but still, no matter which one I was, I would still be a Christian.
Anyway, hope that cleared it up a bit, as I said at the beginning, and what I usually like to tell people when asked what religion I am 'Im a Christian who happens to attend an Anglican Church'.
Edited to add: It works the other way as well, being a Catholic or an Anglican or whatever definetly doesnt make you a Christian iykwim ;)
Mr Noodle...
please, for once, just answer a question and don't nit-pick everyone's answers...please let this not be the beginning of yet another Noodle sermon!!!!

Sheesh, I'm not bagging anyone. I seriously don't have an opinion on Baptists versus any other kind of Christianity.
But they're a fair way from mainstream, and assuming someone is a baptist just because they're baptised is a bit like assuming someone would want to watch an adult video just because they're an adult. The term has a special meaning. An easy assumption to make, but the reactions on both sides could be quite surprising.

Mister Noodle / Mummaduke - Thank you both for your explainations. Now we know there was no harm intended from either side, so lets leave it at that......please? :) I sooooo dont want this thread closed, its going so well and we are all getting along sooooo nicely!!!! :D
CoopsnTilly - THANKYOU for your explaination....I am slowly begining to understand. I did get confused because I consider myself a Christian, and then I knew that everyone who said they were a Christian wasnt the same religion as me....Like I said...Oliver stole my brain! LOL
i agree with everything as mischief said, i too was brought up as a JW, and yes it is hard but as i have gotten older i appreciated the principals ethics and morals it has given me as a person, i consider myself not at all a bible bashing zealot but a loving human being who just wants to live life the christian way and to treat others with the same love that Jesus bestowed to us when he was here on the earth. I have to say most witnesses feel the same way as i do and have no intention of Pushing our beliefs onto people. (you do get a minority that muck it up for us but i think we get that every religion)
I too love to hear about people religions it also facsinates me, i think it is beautiful that we all can talk and not be judgemental to peoples beliefs.
I love different takes on religions, love Jewish history and the islamic culture, i think we should be thankful that we live a Society that is accepting of all!!
You are welcome Mischief :)

Yeah It is slightly confusing, which is why I dont get we just cant be happy that there is a God there, and that the bible is pretty much the same thing world wide and just be happy reading him, praying, and giving our donations or what not to him/charities./ Each to their own and I am glad that they are happy with their religion. I am happy with the fact of knowing God does exsist and is there for people who listen and open up :o

Contrary to what yuou think Mr noodle we are not that far away from mainstream. We just believe Jesus was the Son of God and want to follow his ways and the teachings of God from the bible. We are no less or more mainstream than anglican, uniting, pentecostal or any other Christian religion.

I was thinking about this when I was filling out our census form. Neither DH nor I are practising church members in any sense - though technically I am Baptist and he is Catholic. I didn't know what to put down for DD... so i think I ended up ticking "none". She will be free to choose whatever beliefs she wants to when she is older.
I answered Anglican, as that's where I go right now, but I consider myself a Christian (rather than any subset of Christianity) as I know I can happily worship in a number of those subset churches. I was dissappointed that I had no "Christian" box to tick on the census.:(
And just a comment on churches in general: I've found that there will be different types of services in all of the Christian churches, so you can't easily pigeon hole Catholic as being conservative and baptist and being evangelical. There are some places where you can have traditional services and happy-clappy contemporary servcies at the same church. Sometimes you need to go to a few churches to find one that suits you, you can't just assume that (for example) all Catholic churches are alike.
Cheers
Hi Niamh
No I wasn't referring to your post, just wanted to point out that you can't assume all churches of a particular brand are the same style of worship. There have been lots of ppl stereotyping (I hate that word but can't think of a better one ATM) kinds of churches and even churches in general. My comment related to service styles rather than beliefs.
Does that make sense? This can be tricky in a text only environment :D .
Cheers

The amount of sub-groups with in a religion is quite amazing. My Christian (baptiste) parents-in-law are always swapping churches to find one they 'feel' better about in terms of the style and even the rules. eg some of them don't believe or want to focus on 'gifts of the holy spirit' like speaking in tongues, so if you're into that, you'd have to switch churches.
At their current church there is one woman who's what they call a 'see-er' (what I would call a clairvoyant or psychic). She has visions about people and helps them through her gift. Now, according to my MIL, it is a gift from God because she is attending their Christian church. If, however, she ever broke away from the church, her gift would be from the devil (all of a sudden) and her soul would be doomed. Convenient in my opinion!
Oh dear, have I digressed? Ignore me!

I ticked other. I am a Christian- I don't see my 'religion' as whatever church I go to at the time. I go to a Baptist church but don't consider myself a 'Baptist' at all, but a Christian. I like the church that I go to because there are lots of other young families, a good kid's church programme, good band, good programs and courses and the messages are fantastic. So I hope that I didn't stuff up the poll, but I'm sure that others feel the same way..

Oh, yes- the Baptist church I go to has three services on sundays, the town has 35,000 people but each service has about 400. There is a more contemporary youth service in the evening, and two morning ones- the earlier is more family orientated, with children's programs, groups for 20-35 year olds and the later one is much more conservative.
And I too was dissappointed that there was no 'christian' box to tick in the census.
I voted Other. I was raised Catholic, but DH and I have our own personal beliefs and aren't really religious as such. However, if we were to pick a religion as such we'd say we're Spiritualists, with a twist of Buddhism. DS will not be "given" a religion, but more a grounding in spiritual beliefs of all kinds and guidance.
To answer the Christianity question - Christianity is an umbrella term for all religions that come under the banner of Worshipping Jesus Christ. Catholicism is a form of Christianity, as is Anglican, Baptist etc.
