Hi!

I just wanted to let other parents know about our experience with this product. I am sorry about the length, but it is easiest just to cut and paste from the email I sent Babylove and the ACA:

In preparation for the birth of our first child, we purchased your Recliner & Ottoman from a Melbourne retailer in April 2004 after trying out the demonstration model in store.

Things went well at first, then it started making strange noises regardless of our applying graphite or WD-40. Then suddenly a copper-coloured ring dropped out of the bottom. We kept a close eye on it, but it seemed to be okay, so we kept using it. Then, after around 3 months of use, the chair suddenly collapsed while my husband was rocking our son to sleep. Fortunately it was on a forward rock and my husband was able to lean forward and stand up as the chair fell backwards.

A quick examination showed that the welds connecting the base to the chair had given way. We contacted the Melbourne retailer and were informed that we could obtain a replacement. We agreed with some hesitation, but were persuaded it was just a faulty chair. My husband insisted the replacement chair be opened from the box so that he could check the welds before taking it home. He found a crack in one of the welds which had failed on our original chair, and insisted on a different replacement. The second replacement seemed to be okay.

Things also went well with the replacement chair, although soon strange noises started as before. We took it very carefully, but after a few weeks of the noises with nothing happening, we decided it was just the sound that the chair makes. Today (16 months after our original purchase) I was rocking our son before putting him down for a nap when the replacement chair suddenly collapsed. Unfortunately, it was on the backward part of the rock and we fell backwards and to one side (the side I was holding my son on), and collided with the corner of my son’s cot. I was lucky to get off with a sore shoulder, but wasn’t able to shield my son from the cot corner and wheel lock. Quite aside from the trauma resulting from this happening (especially while half asleep), he has a large bruise in the middle of his forehead and two scrapes running from the bruise up and across his scalp. Very fortunately, this missed his fontanel.

Examination has shown that not simply one, but all four of the welds connecting the base to the chair failed (or at least, the metal in the vicinity has broken). I have attached photos of the broken replacement chair for your review. It now seems clear that instead of one or even two faulty chairs, there is quite possibly a larger safety issue either with the design, the materials or the workmanship used to assemble at least one batch of these chairs. Obviously, we will not be seeking a replacement chair. Equally obviously, the chair and ottoman were certainly not worth the $500 we paid for them.

We realise that Babylove is probably under no obligation, but we think this product should be carefully reviewed, especially any safety testing and the return/fault rate. This incident has left me very shaken and thankful that we didn’t fall into anything that could have collapsed on top of us from the impact. I would hope that Babylove would have an interest in ensuring that this doesn’t happen to any other parents or babies. (I have checked your website and find the product is currently for sale and the image shows the design is the same as the chairs we have had.)

I'm so sorry for your two very scary experiences, Amanda, however I have a babylove rocker and have never had a problem with it! :o It does sometimes squeak when rocking a little but that's only if I am sitting a little off centre in it. I do love it, and fingers crossed nothing will happen with it!!
I do hope you and bub have recovered from this awful fall, it must have been very frightening!
big hugs to you,
Nicole :)

I will never buy another baby love product. I have just managed after 11 months of having a pram fixed so many times it is rediculous to get a refund after making a few non violent threts about media attention. I have now bought a valco and hop the extra money I put into it is worth it. Baby love has the worst customer service I have ever dealt with.

Hello all,

We've had a happy ending and some reassurances about the Babylove brand and manufacturing. With their permission, here is the reply that I received and the matter is now resolved. I'm sorry that caroline did not have a positive experience, too!

I was sorry to here that our recliner had caused you and your son such injuries and I wish you both a speedy recovery. This is obviously an unacceptable situation and I would like to offer you a full refund on the purchase price of the recliner with our apologies for the trouble it has caused.

You did not include your phone number in your e-mail so I must ask you to please contact us 1300 131 477 at your earliest convenience and we can then make arrangements for the refund.

I realise that it is too late to rebuild your confidence in this product (and in our brand as a whole, judging by the tone of your e-mail), however I feel I must at least inform you of a couple of points since the last two paragraphs of your e-mail made some suggestions and asked several questions.

Firstly yes we are still selling a recliner & ottoman product and the picture on our website is the recliner that you have, however this image is not the same as the current recliner. The current recliner has a slightly different looking ottoman (picture was not available when the website was last updated) and is being produced by a different Chinese factory.

After your experience with your recliner I can understand that you have felt the need to check your house for other Babylove products and tell all your friends of your experiences (that is your right, and many people would do the same in the same situation). Can I just mention that as a furniture item this recliner is sourced from a Chinese furniture manufacturer, whereas all of our other imported products are sourced from nursery specific factories so it may be a little unfair to tar all of our products with the same brush. I can assure you that our carseats and child restraints (which are Australian made) are among the best on the market.

Of the recliner style that you purchased we have had 3 returned to us for repair with this same failure (not including the two you have had), only one of which involved cracking in all four base tubes. With your 2 recliners included this represents a fault rate of just less than 2%. So please be assured that this is not something that will happen to lots of these seats. The 3 that we have repaired have not had any reoccurring cracking problems.

Again please accept my apologies no behalf of Babylove for the injuries our product has caused you & your son and please contact us to arrange your refund.

Regards,

Graeme Falla

GOOD ON YOU AMANDA!
Score for you!

I'm so sorry to hear about the injuries you and your darling son obtained, I hope you're both doing a lot better.

I'm so happy for you that you voiced your concerns to the company and that you've received not only a full refund, but what sounds to me, like a genuine apology from the company. They do need to know about faults with their products & unless the consumers advise them, the company will never know.

Also, this has helped me a lot as I was wishing for one of those rocker/recliners as a pressie for baby # 3 (mummy's breast feeding chair!!) so I will be paying close attention to what I'm purchasing. Would you mind giving me the link to the picture of your item on the net? I live in Tas and our choice for these items are extremely limited & our local baby shop mainly stocks babylove. I would love to know which model to avoid.

Thanks again for letting us all know & again, hope you're all ok.

I was doing an online search for rocking chairs & this post popped up. I was really angry when I read it!
I noticed that this post was dated 2005 & now in 2008 I bought the Babylove recliner & Ottoman & the same thing has happened to us!
The base has cracked through the 4 welding points & the chair fell apart. Luckily my son was not hurt. My partner who works with welding says it is a really terrible welding job!
We purchased the chair at Toys R Us in Chatswood. Unfortunately I could not find the reciept, but after alot of argument the store eventually agreed to replace the chair. We weren't very keen to take the same chair as we thought it would just fall apart again, luckily they agreed to give us store credit which we are holding onto until a better brand of chairs comes into stock!
I am apalled that this company sells such unsafe equipment! It has been three years since Amanda contacted the company for the exact same fault in the chair & obviously they have done nothing to try to make it safer! How many babies need to get hurt before this company does something to fix their crappy products!

I have got a Carson and it has done the same thing to us, I took it back and got a new one. Now it is about to colapse again even though the only person who has used it is my 59kgs husbnd:banghead:

I am ringing them tomorrow and ask for someone to come out as I don't feel I should have to arrange to get it there etc.

Wow, I know the people who live across the road tossed one of these out for verge collection and it was in pieces. I wanted on but we couldn't afford it.

Hope you have a speedy recovery:hugs:
