Does anyone know of a health insurance policy that guarentees a private room?? Not subject to availability on arrival??

Hi, i dont know your answer but it did occur to me that if they didnt have the room, even if your health care gauranteed it, the hospital cant provide something that isnt available. For this reason i doubt you will find a provider that will guarantee it. The rooms will go to multiples, c-sections, etc over others so you may get it but it cant be guaranteed.

Hmm I've never heard of such a thing, and I really doubt it exists.
I really don't think a health fund can guarantee such a thing, it just doesn't seem possible. What if alll the private rooms were taken by people with the same 'guarantee'
And even if they weren't all 'guaranteed', I would kick up a mega stink if somebody tried to shift me out of a private room when I have private health insurance ;) Unless of course there was a very good medical or personal reason for it.
Ok, gotcha girls. Thanks :)
Look into HBA and the Mitcham Hospital. Apparently HBA is a preferred supplier or something at the Mitcham so you get a private room. They have recently done the hospital up and all are single rooms. If interested you should go for a pre pregnancy information evening. Keep in mind that you are essentially paying for the room and does not guarantee your length of stay.
The only way you are guaranteed that is if all rooms are private. Most still have some doubles to bore with peak times. I know someone who had to share a room for the first night after a c section and she was not one bit happy.

The hospital I'm going to is all private and so ur obviously guaranteed....
I don't think ur PHI really has much to do with making sure u get ur own room, I could be wrong...

I work in a private hospital and do the bedding list for patients for the next day and private rooms go on priority. We do take into consideration your request if you say something at preadmission.
But as PP if there are no private rooms available there are no private rooms available.

GMHBA has a private room guarentee on there gold plus insurance naturally it is their dearest policy option but if there isn't a private room available when admitted they pay you $50 per night you are not in a private room to a maximum of $150 (3 nights)...
The private hospital I gave birth in had no shared rooms - so a private room was guaranteed :) It was however pot luck as to whether you got a double or single bed.

hi just from my experience i have always been in private health insurance and have been to hospital on several occasions (broken bones x 6 different times) tonsilectomy, child birth and i have never had to share a room nor bath room. but they were all private hospitals, never been to a public 1. even when i had my son the mater mothers hospital was so busy that they didnt have any rooms left, so the first night we stayed in the birthing suit which was really bg and comfy and thenhey put me in the cardic ward (which all still had private rooms/bathrooms)and were right next to the maternity ward. My hubby was able to stay there in the room with me aswell (in a double bed) :D So only going by my experience I would say more definately then not that you will have your own room
Hi
I have PHI with HBA and it has a private room guarantee for all 'booked' admissions ie at least one days notice, if I dont get the single room then the hospital has to pay me $50/day! I took this cover out like 6 yrs ago and it is moderately priced! I'm not sure that it still exists now for you to take out.
Cheers

i think its a hospital policy thing not a health insurance
private hospital generally means private room but may not mean double bed as others have said does not mean you cannot move when room is available
There's a couple of different circumstances to deal with here.
If you're talking about a hospital stay following child birth, then most private hospitals would give you a private room. I don't know of private hospitals with shared rooms in the maternity unit anyway. A public hospital allocates rooms on the basis of need only, so you can request a private room until the cows come home, but you'll only get one if one is available and no one with a need greater than yours needs it.
If you're talking about other admissions - operations for example - in a private hospital there tend to be more private rooms than shared rooms anyway, and often people find themselves in the reverse situation (their health fund only cover a shared room but only a private room is available). If you're talking about operations etc in a public hospital, again, you can ask all you like, but it is done on need.
Basically, if you're going to a public hospital there is very little point being a private patient.
