Has anyone ever used white noise or any other baby sleep cd to help their babies settle? If you have did you find it a successful way to help baby sleep during the day? My angel baby has turned ferral on me since he has reached the 7/8 week old mark (could be growth spurt). For past 2 days I'm finding him so hard to settle, he only seems to catnap and booby seems to be the only way he will quieten down.

Hi

I used a CD of white noise which was recommended to me by a mothercraft nurse. She recommended I use it due to Oscar's reflux which was giving him tremendous trouble sleeping. It was fantastic. She told me to try to put him to bed awake and unaided at first. If this did not work she told me to start the static at a volume loud enough so that I would have to slightly raise my voice to talk over it. It was a miracle and would stop him crying straight away. Apparently it works because babies can only concentrate on one thing: crying or listening. While they try to listen to the static they forget about crying. Oscar would listen to it for a minute and then fall asleep. Hopefully it works the same for other babies.

My advice would be to make sure that there is no underlying cause for your baby's crying (such as reflux or a food intolerance etc) as the static will only mask the problem. Once Oscar's reflux was under control (he was intolerant to cows milk protein and soy) I found I no longer needed to use the static CD.

Good luck

Kimberley (& Oscar - 8 months)

Hi, when my bub was about 2-3 weeks old she wouldn't sleep at all during the day and as a result would get really overtired and cranky. I found the white noise CD (sounds for silence) worked amazingly well for settling her. I wouldn't say it actually put her to sleep but it certainly calmed her right down and stopped the crying!

I actually found rock worked the best for us go figure
I tried a few baby cd's & relaxation cd's etc etc nothing worked in fact Boof hated them so much he often screamed louder !!!
So for us it was either a bit of rock like Bon Jovi or Disturbed or even something harder like Killswitch Engage !!!!
If that didnt work then i would vacuum & he went straight off to sleep
Weird child .... Then again i suppose i had no excuse for not vaccuuming then lol !

I got a little cheap sound machine that makes white noise, ocean waves etc and DS still goes to sleep with the ocean waves playing lightly. His bedroom is next to the road so it just seems to drown out the noise of passing cars.

i found that ocean sounds work the best. so did pink floyd, but that's only because his dad used to play it all the time at top volume while i was pregnant.

not sure how freaked out you get by spiritual stuff, but did you know that untuned frequencies or "white noise" can act as a method of communication with the dead??? hence the reason i was never game enough to use any white noise stuff with DS.

I also use sounds for silence CD and it has been fantastic for my DD. I started using it when she was about 5 weeks and still use it now (5 and half months). It's the only thing that works for her. I play song 1, which is a combination of womb/heart sounds, on repeat. It worked for us in the car too. I highly recommend it!

I always have a little fan going while DD is sleeping (not blowing on her of course), or the airconditioning in summer, but mainly to drown out any outside noises (cars, etc). It works pretty well to keep her asleep if it's a noisy day, but I've never used it as a settling tool.

And I wouldn't worry too much about your bub communicating with the dead through the white noise on the radio.

I bought the baby settling cd that they have in the baby aisle at the local woolworths and Ozzy loves it and has it playing in his room every night.

Unfortunately the cd player broke 4 nights ago and everynight he is waking again now! I think tomorrow I will have to go and buy a new cd player!

Vacuuming, the humming of the fridge, washing machine or dryer used to send DS to sleep when he was younger.

Hi everyone thanks for your help - I've found out from a mothercraft nurse that you can purchase a HoMedics Sound Spa which plays white noise, ocean wave sounds etc that you can get from the shaver shop - its battery operated so is portable. I think I might invest in that!:o

We use little oscillating fans in their rooms ... and we have one in ours too !! we are a whole family who can't sleep without a bit of 'white noise' humming around in the background.
