View Full Version : Nipple thrush- treat all areas?
Hi there, about 3 weeks ago i had a week of antibiotic injections and since I can't seem to shake off nipple thrush
I'm using mouth gel on nipples and baby every feed but it goes away and now less than a week later back again? Does any one know if I need to treat down stairs - I've had no thrush there- I don't think?
Or is there any reason it's come back- it kills and I feel terrible as it upsets my ds soo much.
Also I'm not sure but I think he's sucking his hands coz his mouth must be driving him nuts- I don't think it's teething??
And one last question - he's been on the boob more and thowing up after every feed, would he want to feed for comfort and then bring up the excess?
Sorry this is all new to me so thanks for any tips, :-)

I didn't treat down there as well, but I did have to keep treating my nipples for at ;least a week after my symptoms stopped or it came straight back again.
Kind of like taking AB's I guess... you have to do the full course even if you feel better after a few days.

Hi , I had nipple thrush once bubs was born, he was feeding every hour for about 1/2 an hour each time, i had no idea i had it untill i saw the health nurse.
I used Daktarin gel for bubs mouth and my nipples.
(dont use the scoop/spoon thing to put daktarin in bubs mouth because there was a case where one baby died from chokeing on it. Just put a little on your finger and and rub it on the inside of his cheeks etc)
It took about 2 weeks all up to clear up and when it did my DS was feeding less, he was sucking for comfort.
Could you use a dummy for him to suck until it clears?
And No i didn't have to treat 'downstairs' for thrush because i didn't have it down there.
Oh and make sure you 'air out' your boobs for a bit throughout the day, thrush thrives an moist, warm areas.
Hope it clears up soon.
Thanks and I think I probably stopped too soon as you say NM I'll continue this for as long as Nec .
I'm actually using daktarin and I was only told to do it for 3-5 days, so this time I'll go for 2 wks as you did JC
ds is 12wks and has never needed a dummy but I may try it to help him too- he even sucks in his sleep- poor thing

DS went through a hand sucking stage about then, so the two might not be related. It lasted until he started crawling and needed his hands for more exciting things. ;)

As the others have said...keep the gel up for a good wk or 2 after it clears up to be sure, dont use the spoon to apply it to bubs mouth, loads of topless time (nothing on your top half, pop the gell on & let your nipples 'air' out), PLUS soak all your bra's in napisan or canesten then wash in hot water & dry in the sun (the sun will kill any thrush remaining in the bra's).
Bub may be feeding more frequent simply because the pain & discomfort of feeding is making your supply slightly drop...dont stress (nothing to panic about) as lots of water, rest & foods with protien can help that as will eliminating the thrush. I never liked dummies but thats me.
I had it very bad for 4mths without knowing & once above was done it cleared up in no time to lead on to the long journey we are still on today....Good luck :)
Yes I've seen some bubs getting there hands right in there- just ds1 never put anything in his mouth so I wasntcsure, also because Ds2 has been so happy and only upset now- my step mum- baby expert granny ;-) thinks he's teething or that maybe he's really hungry ready for solids early!!!!that my milks just not enough-and how would I know he's getting enough?? She says
Gez lucky I'm confident that a weigh gain of 350g per week should mean he's not starving and trying to eat his own hand- :-)

Oh, one more thing that was recommended to me for thrush of either sort was to cut the sugars form my diet for a while... high sugars in your diet creates a perfect environment for the thrush to grow in.

Rubbish...with weight gain like that your milk is having no problem at all!! Keep up the good work
My bubs always had hands in mouth chewing when teething & although gained massively on my boobie juice was ready for very small amount of solids by just under 4mths.
Hey thnks bout the bras - I've been camping for a week with the family so that prob hasn't helped- where home now so I will clean and sun boobs and bras- thanks little blue kiss and I'm not sure bout dummy hope to get though without, just though to comfort him.
Hey and NM your possibly onto something- sugar !! It was easter and well yes quite a bit of sugar later in my diet. So thanks heaps I can do without the cms on the hips too, and I was wondering bout my diet, I've been told to eat yoghurt too?

Hi, I had thrush with my latest baby, I couldn't shake it either, which the Dr said was a bit strange coz I've ever had vaginal thrush, and usually nipple thrush goes away easily if you are not a thrushy person apparently.
Anyway, she prescribed me Diflucan (like for vaginal thrush) once a day for 3 days I think it was, then a course of another thrush treatment, maybe Nilstat or something, I might be getting mixed up, but it was another tablet to take maybe 4 times a day for a few days, straight after I finished the Diflucan. All the while using the Daktarin gel as well.
I had tried EVERYTHING natural, cutting sugar and breads out, sunning and airing, coconut oil etc etc, the only thing I didn't try was gentian violet but apparenty thats pretty good. We were having attachment issues and I just had to get rid of it so did the medicines and it worked finally.

when i was suspected of having nipple thrush i was told by the LC to treat myself for 21 days straight. so that you catch the whole cycle of thrush. if it still doesnt go away (it might be in the milk ducts) then ask for a prescription for the oral thrush pill

DS had oral thrush and me nipple thrush for almost 2 MONTHS. all in all we wnet through 4 tubes of daktarin, two bottles of nilstat and i took about 12 tablet of diflucan. very expensive.
just keep up with the daktarin for at least two weeks after symptoms disappear. I used to put the daktarin on DS's dummy, but if you don't use a dummy, then let your bub suck it off your finger
