Hi all,

My little girl has her first cold and just wanted to know what other Mum's have done to help ease the discomfort (for both Bub and Mum!) I am finding it really hard as I feel so helpless for her (but I can be a bit of a control freak - I'm sure that doesn't help!)

She has a runny nose and is "snorty" and congested. She isn't eating her rice cereal and isn't really interested in breastfeeding, either.

I have been using the aspirator on occasion to help, but she hates it. She hasn't been sleeping much so is quite grizzly.

Tonight, after her bath, I dressed her in her onesie and sleeping bag, and put some Vicks on the lining of her sleeping bag to help her breathe. Also have a hanky lathered in Vicks in the corner of her cot and another with Eucaclyptus - both out of reach. I have also raised the mattress with a pillow underneath.

Gave her some Infant Panadol last two nights before bed and both times she vomitted quite badly. Might try Nurofen as I have heard of other Bubs with vomitting after Panadol. Can you use Medic or another spray when Bubs are this young?

Any other advice would be appreciated as I feel so sorry for her. I know it's just a cold and all, but I hate seeing her so miserable.

Cheers.

Seems like you are doing all the right things.

Only other things you could try is the fess drops (instead of the spray) - especially for little ones.

There is also a thing called karvol which I used to buy and rub on a cloth and put it in the cot (but out of bubs reach) it has a really funny smell and is meant to help their breathing.

Other than that....you may just have to ride it out....sorry.

I remember reading on here somewhere that you could rub vicks on the soles of bubs feet - but can't remember if 6 months is too young for this and also can't remember if it is for a cough or a cold.

Hope your little one feels better soo.

Do you have a vaporiser? We invested in one when DD got her 1st cold and it was a life saver, if she ever has a stuffy nose we put it on and it normally clears it up overnight while she sleeps. :)

My 10 week old is just getting over his first cold. We used narium drops, which is just saline to help soften the mucus in his nose. In theory u then use the aspirator but he hated it. Instead we would sit him up and it would run out or it would make him sneeze it out.

I also had him in the room while I showered and when we were both home we showered with him. The steam helped him decongest.

Also tried to prop him up as much as possible. Put a pillow under his mattress

:iagree:I found Karvol was amazing when my little man had his first cold (and more since!). Lately I haven't been able to find it anywhere though, I'm really hoping they haven't taken it off the market! It used to be available in chemists, now some of them don't even know what I'm talking about!

I've also heard of rubbing vicks on the soles of the feet and putting socks on. I didn't know until my son was older and actually able to have vicks on his skin but I found that great too. You could do it with the Vicks Baby Balsam?..

My son hated the nasal aspirator aswell but I did use it at least every night before bed. I dropped in some of the saline drops and then sucked it all out. I think the minute of discomfort was worth the comfort he got by having a clear nose.

I also bought one of those Vicks Vapour Plugs and put it on in the room when he was trying to sleep. I did the works because I hated him being uncomfortable but didn't really like giving medication if I could avoid it. I'm sure my friend got some sort of Dimetap or Demazin for her baby to help dry up the snot though... You could always try that! Good luck!
