Hello,

My husband had a vasectomy last november and never went back for a checkup. Last month I missed my period, did pregnancy test came up positive (blood test was negative) but then 2 weeks later had a period. I'm not sure if I was actually pregnant or if it was a chemical pregnancy. Anyway it was a shock at first but have since decided that having a third child would be great. Now I am faced with the problem of either being content with 2 children or persuing another baby. I really want another baby.
My husband had a sperm count done last week and the test came back inconclusive, meening that there was sperm presant but not sure if they are viable as when he did the test the specimen was 24hrs old.
My husband said he got the impression that it hadn't worked but I'm not sure if he's just saying that to keep me happy, as he's happy to try again but not if that meens having a reversal. I'm not sure where to go from here, any ideas? Is there a chance that we can have another baby?

Regards
Rachel

Hi Rachel,

The answer is yes, there is a chance you can have another baby if there is viable sperm in the sample. The best way to check really is by doing another semen analysis that gets analysed within 2 hours from ejaculation. However the chances aren’t great because technically there would be very little sperm in a sample after a vasectomy.

Here really is where your predicament lies though... the best option to afford you a good chance of conception is a vasectomy reversal.

The longer since the time of surgery (vasectomy procedure), the least likely a reversal is to succeed (due to the man’s development of antibodies to his own sperm and/or permanent damage to the vas deferens). So what you both really need to decide is: Do you REALLY want another baby enough to actively pursue this option—and ideally this would mean a vasectomy reversal.

It’s important you are both happy with your final decision, irrespective of what it is, so you can both move on from here without second thoughts and “what ifs”. One thought to ponder through is... there must be a reason why you both agreed a vasectomy was the best option for you to begin with.

I hope this helps!

Let me know if you have any further questions.
