Hi,

Just a quick question:

For some reason, I've got it in my head that Altona is not a nice place to live and is a bit dodgy. Don't know where I've got that idea from.

Anyway, we're looking to move down to Victoria (somewhere between Geelong and Melbourne) and Altona has come up on our real estate searches and actually looks quite nice and is certainly affordable for us.

So, my question is: does anyone live there? Is it nice or are my initial ideas right? Any info would be great. Or suggestions on surrounding suburbs that you can recommend.

TIA

It depends on what part of Altona you want to live - Altona Meadows is quite nice, North Altona I wouldn't want to live there if you can find anything Altona / Seaholme it is quite nice.

It used to be (when I was growing up) a dodgy suburb and Altona North still is however Altona Meadows or Altona itself is really nice.

Depending on your budget Williamstown, Yarraville and Seddon are beautiful also!

I live near Altona (Yarraville) Altona North is very industrial, but your near the freeway and the shopping centre. Altona is nicer, more suburbia, plenty of schools, sporting grounds. I personally don't like Altona Meadows, I'd go to Point Cook if you want something near there. But you also have the beach, it's not that nice though. Williamstown is better (if you have a million to spend!!)
Otherwise come down to Yarraville:D Older suburb, older houses with character, lots of cafes, restaraunts, pubs (you'll love the village), shops, better access to the city and other suburbs, lots of young families in the area, your also nearer to Highpoint, Maribyrnong river, Docklands etc.

MyBabyLeo - you're right I lived next to Altona area for years (grew up in Williamstown) and I always get the Meadows and normal Altona confused!!!

Definitely look at Altona / Seaholme as that is the nicest area....oh and Yarraville is fantastic area too and I agree with MBL is much closer to the CBD while still being only an extra 10 from Geelong!

Yep all are great suburbs, not Meadows or North. Also with the realestate searches also cross check them against whereis or google maps as sometimes the realestate agents put down "Altona" but the property is really in "Altona Meadows" or "Altona North" I noticed this a lot when we were looking to move back up to Melbourne.

Williamstown is beautiful I wish I could move back there with DD!

Good luck and let us know if you have any more questions you can PM me I'm always more than happy to answer as I spent 21 years in the area
