Hey,
in the second half of this year I am going to Thailand for a couple of weddings and decided while I am over there to volunteer in an orphanage. I have been before a couple of times and done the tourist thing and wanted to do something worthwhile this time.
Just wanted to know if anyone has been to any of the orphanages at all so I know what to expect when I get there, as there is only so much info you get from pamphlets etc.
Cheers :)

I have been to an orphanage in Bangkok (can't remember what it was called).
It was run pretty well considering, though was sad, all the kids at this particular one were hiv positive so were unable to be rehomed :(
They just liked to spend time with you and do activities etc, was definately and eye opener.
I use to work with a beautiful girl that spent 3mths working in an Orphanage and living with the staff in Nepal.
She found it quite tough going, there is little for them to do with the children. Lucky this girls is very creative and musical.
About 6mths after finishing there she still had contact with some of the staff and said that most of the children from when she had been there had left and where living on the streets but that new children had taken there place.
There can sometimes be variation between countries but more importantly been individual orphanages - especially if they are receiving foreign $$$ support.
Good Luck
My advice is to do it 'AFTER' you have been to the weddings - my friend got quite physically :barf: when working at the orphanage (and she works in early childhood in Australia so it just showed that the sicky bugs were different).

How sad about the HIV babies not being able to be rehomed :(
that would of been a real eye opener.
And that is great advice, I hadn't even thought of the sicky bugs etc. Not sure my friends would love the bridesmaid being violently sick during the ceremony!!
At this stage it will only be 3 weeks I can volunteer for, I was hoping for a bit longer but there is only so much time off my manager is willing for me to take. So if all goes well may so it again.
Thanks for the advice :)
