Hi all
My little brother is in the Army (we are very close), he just finished his Alfa training at Kapooka and was sent to Singleton on the Weekend, he said that he's being put in a holding platoon for 3 weeks, and he said he might be able to come back to Tassie, but he hasn't been told if he can or not and said he'll be told at the last minute.
My question is how likely is it that he'll be able to come home? And for how long?
Id really like to see him as this will probably be the last time for a while, as he has been told that he'll be sent out of the country after he's done his infantry and para-trooping training.
**I hate it how the Army seem to tell them everything at the last minute, it seems very unfair for them and their familys**

I dont want to sound harsh, but get used to it! They never tell you anything until the last minute. My DF has been in for 6 years now. Even when they do tell you something, take it with a grain of salt until it actually occurs. Things change all the time. I always assume the worst case cenario, that way you are prepared for it but you get a nice suprise if it works out your way.
When DF finished his IET training in Singleton, he was sent home for about 3 days so we could pack up the house & move together. We were recognized defacto. I dont know what happens with single members. I assume he would still have personal affects at home that he would want to take with him to his posting location? If this is the case they should send him home for a few days to pack etc before going to his battalion.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get to see each other again soon.

Sorry KaileysMum - but I'm with Sharvs on this... When it comes to defence, pretty much EVERYTHING is last-minute, unconfirmed and inconvenient.
I have a girlfriend whose fiance was sent to sea with 3 hours notice (in other words he was crash-posted) He was told it would be for 3 weeks, but he got home 3 months later.
You will probably find that once he has served a lengthy deployment (6 months plus) then he should have a bit more 'say' in future deployments. Though, this is a rule-of-thumb and is ALWAYS subject to change
Best Wishes :hugs:

yes, as a general rule if the member has a holding period they are allowed to go home for a little while. usually a week if they put in for that long. though this is subject to the approval of their commanding officer.
his personal effects can be packed by family members still at the residence if the member gives permission for this to occur.
hope this helps.

Thanks guys for all your help. And comment about the way the defence forces work. It must be hard for you ladies to have your partners in there. You must be strong!!! Looks like he wont be coming back this time, but hopefully he'll get home after his finished his training.
