Hiya, a bit of advice please!
I'm TTC, and I want to work through as much of my pregnancy as possible when the time comes.
But I work in a pub! whilst alot of the time I'm in the bistro section, and we have good extractor fans in the bars, i still breathe a hell of alot of smoke from the patrons. I'm not a smoker myself but I wonder sometimes if i may as well be from the amount i inhale!
i know smoking while pregnant = BAD, but where does passive smoking for 20 or so hours a week fit on the scale?
( just say this icon - maybe i should get the patrons these! :detective: )

i didn't think that they allowed smoking inside at pubs now. the one i work for if you want a smoke you have to go outside to a special area and you aren't allowed to take your drinks.
i would ask your boss if you could just work in the bistro section as you don't want the smoke to harm your baby

South Aust got the wooden spoon for being the last state by fat to go for total smoking bans, we dont get them until 31 oct next year!!! they have even been pushed back again, a few months ago it was June, a few months before that it was Jan. but at the moment you can still chimney away!
problem with just bistro work is that the hours are a maximum of 3 a night, and im a duty manager and part of what i do is close the pub 2-3 nights a week, meaning i have to be everywhere ::confused:

you could always wear a mask to work. :D or just try not to breathe too much fumes. maybe you could try to get day shifts instead where there isn't as many people smoking

well im a smoker, and think its appalling yoou dont have the bans in your state, its one thing to smoke its another to have to put up with everyone elses:eek:
it wont seriously harm your baby but you should try to get out of the smokey rooms because i think its worse then smoking, its so horrible.
perhaps if you can afford it you should quit

Hey Alatariel
I worked in a pub throughout 90% of my pregnancy. Before the smoking laws were in. I also smoked throughout the first trimester (albeit unknowingly - didn't realise I was pregnant til 14 weeks). I worked fulltime hours at the pub including a lot of night shifts on the weekend (heavy smoke times) and I had no complications resulting from it. Of course it's not an ideal situation to be in, but you have to earn a living, and pregnant women aren't on top of the list when it comes to re-employment!
Just try to avoid the smoke as much as possible - ask to work in the times when there are less patrons and less smoke etc
Good Luck!:fingerscrossed:

thanks guys!
I keep getting torn between not wanting to expose potential bubs to smoke, and knowing that so many bubs have been exposed and been just fine. I've beenscared to mention it to my doc in case they just flat out said to quit, coz i just cant afford to! Though i'll be going back on Austudy (which im eligible for but id rather work while im studying, less stress with Centrelink!), having the cash from work, which is rather well paid, is so handy!
