View Full Version : Bad Preservatives
I was just wondering what the bad preservatives are in the foods someone just mentioned 282 in another thread. I was wondering if anyone could tell me generally what most of the bad ones were and what type of foods you generally find them in :D

This is a great link to follow. This website was started by Sue Dengate who has written a number of books relating to additives, preservatives, allergies and intolerances. We have a book of hers called "Fed Up".
I find that my dd (3yrs old) seems to become very 'out of control' if she eats white bread. But is ok when she has other wheat free/gluten free/organic and other breads that dont have the preservatives.
I have tried her with this a couple of times and she is definately reacting to it.
Does anyone elses toddler become just 'out of control' or 'really full of energy' when consuing white bread or anything else???

That's the 282 preservative link. If you want white bread with none of that in it, use Sunblest, Tip Top 'up' or anything from a Brumby's bakery.
We avoid it completely and about 4 months ago, went for a weekend away where the food for children was incredibly poor - a lot of breads and hot chips were about the only things on offer. By the Sunday mid-morning, DS had a major meltdown similar to his ones when he was 14 months and having bread with 282.
Thank-you everyone this is very helpful. My son is very full of energy to a point where he is out of control. I am starting to think he diffinately need to be more careful what he eats. He doesnt have softdrink or lollies and sugar on everything so it has to be the preservatives. That tip also for the Tip Top bread  I will give it a go. Thanks everyone, lots of reading to do now :D
I have just noticed that woolies "homebrand" bread is preservative free now:smiliedance:
Finally some companies are taking notice.
Other things to avoid are arterficial colours, flavours and Flavour enhancers
Just wanted to add that my dd is very sensitive to 282 and just has the vilest tantrums when she consumes it. Recently we went away and MIL accidently gave her a hot dog bun with 282 in it and she went crazy for a few days afterwards.
There are some other brands of breads that are fine, 9Grains, Mighty Soft and Helgas are all good. Just watch other products too such as crumpets, english muffins and refridgerated pasta as these things contain 282. It takes about a week to notice a difference s hopefully it works for you:)
Also i just noticed that a few of the fresh OJs have a preservative in them such as some golden circle ones and Juice of orange..not the my Dd has juice but im not going to but it even for myself anymore....
I think mostly it has to be bread. Also the juice we dont drink juice here for that reason, also because DH used to work for Berri and now we know how bad juice is :D

Most of those breads mentioned before that don't have the 282 (other than Brumbies and Bakers Delight) add vinegar instead. This can also have a negative effect on behaviour. I was wondering why my girls were going a little silly, and checked out Sue Dengate's site again. I thought I was doing ok leaving out the 282, but the bread I was using added vinegar.
I am also noticing that my eldest daughter reacts badly to Tomato Sauce, and she loves it. I don't know what else to give her when she has her Chicken Nuggets.

i had made a big long post here last night but due to the big probs with bubhub it seems to have been lost :(
basically in a nutshell i explained how these preservatives are practically in everything these days from the packet pasta (u know the continental types etc) to even mince or margarine!
i have been to a few seminars run by a lady over here who has also written a great book additive alert by julie eadywhich explains what is good, what is bad in the way of additives and preservatives, the effects of these in our diets and what the better alternatives are in brands to buy.
it even explains how the food companies are trying to be sneaky and use long confusing names or being vague when it comes to listing them on packets and how to overcome this!
it has been a lifesaver for me as my second son seems to react to alot of these.
the book is available for $20 from her site http://www.additivealert.com.au/ or even sold at big w and some bookstores.
hope this helps :) pm me if you have any questions :D

Our 2nd son is very sensitive to preservatives and colours in foods. We started by eliminating bread products from the supermarket, even tip top etc that use vinegar because as someone stated previously those kids that are sensitive to 282 are also usually sensitive to vinegar. We usually only make our own bread now or very occasionally go to Bakers Delight/Brumbys. We noticed a big improvement in behaviour but he still lost the plot frequently. We now buy preservative free meat from the butcher and check all the food labels thoroughly when food shopping. For the occasional treat (his 4th birthday party on the weekend) we buy the Natural Confectionery Company lollies or soft drink. Apparently Allens do a natural range too but we haven't tried them! We have noticed a big improvement in behaviour. He is almost a different kid. Julian has a speech disorder and we have even noticed an improvement in his speech. His confidence is also up and he is socialising much more with other kids. The frustration/anger issues just don't seem to be there anymore. If he does eat something with preservative in it he just meltsdown. He gets aggressive, starts bouncing off walls, starts screaming and just generally antisocial. An absolute opposite to the kid he is when he is off preservatives and colours - a happy, affectionate, gentle and social little boy!
We have found that any foods with 280 preservatives in them set him off so watch out for these. It can be in bread, crumpets, pikelets, hamburger/hotdog rolls, muffins, taco shells and some juices. Anything with a long shelf life. 282 is a mould inhibitor - used so that bread can be packaged while warm and not go mouldy!! We have family that own a couple of Brumby stores and while their bread products are preservative free some of their other lines are not eg sausage rolls. So be aware of what you are buying!
I definately recommend viewing Sue Dengate's books or the fed up website!
Please feel free to pm if you want to chat.
Rebecca:thumbsup:
wow so much to think about i was thinking about a bread maker today and maybe I might just make my own bread. Can you buy bread mix without these preservatives in them?

Yes, we make all our own bread with a bread maker using preservative free bread mix.

If you do still want to buy cordial there is a brand on the market that is free of preservatives, arterficial colours and flavours.
I can also recomend "Fuze" soft drink for a treat itgo no preservatives, arterficial colours, flavours and no added sugar. It is made by P&N and tasts GREAT:thumbsup:
