Remember those little yellow mail box plaques with pictures of houses on them ? They used to be everywhere. When I was in school most streets had two or three Safety Houses. These days you will be lucky to find 10 in a whole suburb http://members.*************.com.au/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif
This Week is SAFETY HOUSE Week.
For those of you who have never heard of Safety Houses let me explain... http://members.*************.com.au/style_emoticons/default/original.gif
The Safety House program is designed to keep children safe while they travel to and from school.
Safety Houses are houses that provide a safe refuge for children who are scared, hurt, chased, attacked or lost.
All Safety Houses have to pass a police check and are then permanently flagged on the police data base whilst they are part of the program.
As a co-ordinator for my suburb I can tell you that all suburbs need more safety houses and it is VERY hard to find people who meet the requirements to be one.
What you need to do to be a Safety House.
* Be home 80% of the time for the hour before school starts and the hour after school finishes. (so 4 out of 5 days) - school pick ups & drop offs are fine and school holidays don't count either.
* Fill in a Police Check form and a Stat Dec (processed for free by the police dept)
* Have a short interview with your local Safety House Coordinator.
*Be willing to help child in need by calling their parent or the police as needed. ( You do not need to know first Aid, let children into your home or provide them with food, drinks, toilet etc - the only thing you need to do is to call someone to collect or help them).
* You also need to be able to have a Little yellow plaque attached to your mail box and access to your front door must be easy and visible from the sidewalk (ie No high non-see through fences, bushes etc).
So if any of you meet the requirements and would like to be a Safety House could you please, please call the Safety House Association?
