My blood type is A- and I've recently heard that I should have had an injection at (I think) 28 & 32 weeks for some reason but not really sure what it is ???? (DH is A+)
Anyone know about this? I am going to ring the hospital tomorrow and ask them, but just need to find something out tonight as I won't be able to sleep unless I know.
Thanks in advance
Jodi

Hi Jodi,

I too am A- blood type. I was given an injection at 28 weeks and again at 34 weeks and when i give birth, they wil give another one then.

Basically the reason it is given is that in the case your partner is a + blood type, and if then the baby is also +, If your bloods cross, your body will see your baby as a foriegn object and try to expell it (i think this is sort of what happens).

Anyway, previously they only use to give the injection once they found out your babies blood type and then if it was opposite to what you are, they would then give the injection. Now most Dr's seem to give it as routine to be on the safe side. Also the reason they give the one to you after baby is born aswell is for protection for any future babies you may have.

Hope that makes sense :)
