I am losing my mind! 8 month old DS has been up all night (every 1-2 hours) for three months now! First it was dairy intolerance, then teething, then a cold, then teething again .. and now he is waking up all night CRAWLING!!!

I've read about how when babies are learning a new milestone they can't switch off and wake up practicing, but this is too much! I need some SLEEP!

Is there any way to control this crawling little man? I've tried the tight sheet option, but no luck!!

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful but is he in a sleeping bag?

Is he crying when he wakes up? DD occasionally wakes up thru the night, but she will just crawl around the cot a bit, play with the toys on the side then go back to sleep...tho I'm sure one night soon she will stand up and start screaming for me  I don't go in to her unless she is cries for a few mins, usually she kinda grizzles for a min then plays then she's back asleep within 10mins.
Sorry, can't suggest anything really helpful, DD wriggles out of the tight sheet too.

onelittlegirl - I used to have him in a sleeping bag, but he was cooking in it! Now he's just in a Wondersuit.

cwsmum - he's really howling! I think he starts to crawl around happily, but then bumps his head on the side of the cot, or gets stuck in a corner and gets distressed! (Or wants to go back to sleep and isn't sure how while he's on all fours!) :o

The best thing I ever did when my son went through this stage was invest in a safe-t-sleep. It is like a sheet which attaches around the matress and another bit of fabric goes around babies waist. I found it to be great for the standing up stage too, my son honestly got such better sleep when I started using Safe-T-Sleep. I will be using it when he goes into the big bed too for a while as it prevents them from falling out. Anyway - just a suggestion, use it in conjunction with a sleeping bag and bub wont stand a chance of crawling.

the best thing i did was sleep my son in a gobag with no blankets at all. its help heaps and i also have 2 rolled towels under his bottom sheet which lay each side of him so there is not so much room to move. i still do this and my son is neally one. gobag is the go, stops my son from moving and climbing heaps... :fingerscrossed:

sleeping bag or gro bag is a good option (just pop a singlet and nappy on him if he gets too warm in them..) but if he is anything like Samuel he will learn to crawl in the bag anyway!

My advice is just stick it out, it wont last forever (i know that seems hard to hear now!) eventually he will get over it.

When you go into him when he is upset just put him under his blanket, tell him its sleep time and walk away... i call it "robot mum" he needs to know that mum is no fun at sleep time so he will eventually (hopefully) just start settling himself.

Goodluck :hugs:

I went through a similar thing with my dd where she would caterpillar crawl up and hit her head on the end of the cot .... cry ... go back to sleep after 10 mins .... then turning around and doing the same thing on the other end a couple of hours later :banghead:

We put a rolled up towel or quilt up one end of the cot (under the matress) so it was like a little ramp (also works when colds and stuffy noses). She didn't stop getting up the other end but it certainly slowed her down to taking up to 4 hours to get there.

I have also heard of others interlacing sheets through the bars so that it created a mini-bumper, hence not hurting their head ... wasn't much of a fan of the idea though as I thought that this could be a sids risk.

Take peace in knowing that he can't hit his head hard enough to cause any pain ... he's mostly crying as he gets a fright.

Good luck and he should grow out of it in no time.
