View Full Version : Does Fast flow mean fast feed?
I have a 6 week old bub and his feeds never go any longer than about 10mins, I've been told to ensure a full tummy make sure the feed goes for 20 mins or more. I've a really fast letdown and flow and wondered if this would be the reason why my bub refuses to feed any longer than 10 mins. When I say fast I mean it - after the letdown it comes out like a shower head and travels metres if I didn't have a towel handy! LOL
i don't think that timing feeds is a good way to work out when a baby has a full tummy.
it sounds like you are doing great in reading your baby's cues of when he's had enough. letting your baby feed for as long as he wants on the first breast before offerring the second is a great way of ensuring he's full.
i also had fast flowing/strong letdown and found that one boob was often enough as my bub seemed to get so much milk.
i really like the saying "watch your baby , not the clock:) ".

All bubs feed for different lengths of time. MJ has never fed for very long. Her feeds lasted no more than 10 minutes, now at 14months, she never feeds for longer than 5.
As long as bub is having lots of wet nappies there's nothing to worry about.

I agree with the other mums here. I have always had an exceptionally fast letdown- All my babies have had to get used to gulping non-stop once my milk lets down! I have a friend who is a midwife and she often says a baby who feeds quickly is not necassarily an efficient feeder, but the mother has a very efficient let down. :D
Thanks for your replies - I'd say my bubs has no choice but to feed fast and he does seem to be growing and not demanding feeds too often either. I've just got to learn to relax a bit and go with my instincts!

ditto!!
I watched the clock far too much. Bubs growing, wet nappies & the other things you mentioned are much better signs that he is getting enough.

By the sound of it, you and bub are doing a great job of it!
I had a really fast letdown too, and found that expressing a little bit before each feed made it easier for bub. He still had to learn to drink fast though! Now he eats like there's no tomorrow..... I wonder if that's why.

I have a fast let-down on my left side, so I found that baby has preferred the right one. I have also found that each child has responded differently...to breastfeeding...my fourth being the most efficient..
