View Full Version : Gulping The Wind. Old Wive's Tale?
I'd never heard of this before but my older neighbour mentioned is, as did husband's nana. Because they're both older I figured it was an old wive's tale but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Do babies REALLY 'gulp' the wind and get gassy on windy days?
The idea sounds silly to me.. but Nana insisted that Chris' dad gulped the wind one day and oh it was terrible. She was 'thinking of me' yesterday because we had to drive in that wind. Instead of saying anything like "Surely that's impossible" I said "Well, that's the joy of air-con, right?"
Any truth to it? Any other Nanas telling you about anything that sounds silly?
Dunno but I had the same reaction when I was told babies were alergic to sunlight and sure enough, a young baby will usually sneeze when in direct sunlight.

i was told by a eldery relative that ds's spewiness could be stopped if i let him drink water inbetween feeds. when i asked ds's pead about this she said not to do it coz ds was still getting used to sucking and it would only cause more problems.

I always found MJ to get wind when out on a windy day :yes:
Oh and the sneezing in sunlight, i was always told that if i felt like i had to sneeze to look at light & it would make me sneeze. It works too. You know how you cant sneeze with your eyes open, well maybe its like a survival mechanism to make you close your eyes so that the sun doesnt damage your eyes :yes:
My nan has always told me that its good to let babies scream - it'll exercise her lungs, if i touch MJs feet she will stutter, if she looks over her head she'll go insane etc :ecomcity:
Needless to say, i dont talk to my nan much anymore :o

:eek::laughing:
I'm baffled as to how one can believe these!! Oh, the things that our Nan's were told- even worse, how they just blindly believed cr@p like this!!
I had a friend put her baby down in the lounge, and let her cry and walked outside, when I commented "Ooh that baby's crying" she said...
"Oh, she's just growing lungs that way."
I was a bit "Buh?"
Poor cobey's going to have an aweful stutter, I do nothing but play with his feet!
hi there,
gulping the wind is actually true, if you want to test the theory blow on your baby's face and he will more than likely take a gulp of air.
