Im really conviced now that my son must be having a growth spurt. Im worried though because he is already quite small and thin that if he has one there will be nothing left lol

So Im wondering what foods I can give him to help bulk him up so when this growth thing comes he wont be a skelaton :laughing:

Im not talking about chocolates and lollies:no: But I have no idea what will help....

Porridge and formula, my bub went from the 10th percentile to 50th in a month when I started to give her formula. He might just be going to be tall and is growing in length before outwards.

No matter what I do, my child will not fatten up. Keep in mind that some children and adults may just have smaller builds naturally.

Yeah I know that :yes: Its just I look at my son and cringe because it makes me feel like such a bad mother because I can see his ribs and spine bones. He eats enough to keep him going ALL day so Im sure he is getting enough...I just get horrible feelings like Im going to get pulled up on it by child safety or something :laughing: Irrational fears I guess... His dads side are skinny so Im hoping that he is just taking after them and not my fat @rse side:laughing:

Ok well Im looking at him now and he isnt THAT bad I guess... Just when he sucks his gut in and streches lol.... Dont worry I guess Im just stressing over nothing

Seriously my son looks starved and he is a pig. He eats 3 weekbix for breaky or a plate of scrambled eggs, two pieces of toast and fruit. Yoghurt and fruit for morning tea, cooked lunch or two sandwhiches and a glass of milk sometimes with some cheese and biccies after, afternoon tea is vegetables and hommus dips and pita bread chopped up, dinner is the same size meal as what I would eat which is about the standard portion size as an adult.

Obviously I offer a variety but that's about it. He can eat an entire avocado in one sitting if I'd let him :eek:. He is 2.4 years old and weight about 11 kilo and is about 87cm tall. He's super skinny, some kids are built that way.

wow he IS a pig haha Well my son doesnt eat that much lol but he has been eating alot for him lately.

My son is lean as too - I look at him and cringe sometimes too when he's ribs start showing. He's 3 and a half, 14kgs and 100cm tall. He's just had his adenoids and tonsils out so food has suddenly become his best friend.

But before this, we tried toddler formula, yoghurt, sandwiches, even 2 min noddles sometimes just to get him to eat it, love sausage rolls, anything pasta (we eat a lot of pasta now!), fruit etc. We just constantly offered him food - crackers and dips, grapes, sultanas, you get the picture.

You just have to do what you can. We didn't go to low fat food either, we stayed on all full fat - might be wrong but we didn't think we should given that he doesn't eat/drink much dairy we wanted him to have the fattening stuff LOL.

He'd eat me out of house and home if I'd let him. He only eats good healthy food which is great but it is a lot but he's always on the go, doesn't watch TV and is constantly burning it off. My DH has the exact same metabolism, if only I did too :D

Just offer a range of fresh and healthy foods, a variety of grains (ie rye and barley as well as wheat, there are some awesome rye sourdoughs on the market that are so good for gut health), legumes (ie lentils, peas, chickpeas) rice etc, fresh fruit and vegies, good sources of proteins (meat, lentils, mushrooms, eggs, fish), good sources of dairy (wholefat cheeses, yoghurts and milks), and don't skimp on the good oils - ie avocados, olive oil salad dressings, fish oils etc. Cut out empty calories too ie white breads, white rice, white sugar, processed foods. They do nothing to add to the overall nutritional intake, they just serve to make your digestive system work harder without much/any gain (and when you're trying to promote healthy growth this is a very bad thing).

I wouldn't be taking any extraordinary steps to 'fatten him up' - it's unlikely to work (or if it does, it won't be a 'healthy' kind of fattening up!). Kids go through phases where they plump up and then lean out, and it's all normal. Just continue to offer a wide variety and broad range of foods and have healthy foods on hand for him to snack on.

My kids are the same, as my DH says, you can't fatten a thoroughbred ;) My kids eat all day yet are quite slender, they have their father's lean genes. My MIL asked recently if DD has lost weight. She hasn't she's just shot up height wise and this may be the case with your boy.

If he is eating well, he's just a slender boy, there's nothing wrong with that :D

Thats really cute lol. It just worries me He has been 10 kilos since he was like 1...So a year. He is a shorty yes...But... I thought they are meant to be putting weight on...Anyways Im takign him to see a CHN lol I completely forgotten about that... So I will see what she has to say.

My DD is 6 in sept and weighs around 16 kg. What are the family genes like in regard to weight and height?

If you are worried by all means take him to see someone. If you said he wasn't eating then there may be a problem. But he sounds just fine Peppah :yes:

I wouldn't be particularly worried - a lot of kids are just naturally quite slender, no matter what they eat.

If you do want to still try and fatten him up though, maybe offer some more carbs - (wholegrain is best - pastas, rices, breads, etc). Dairy is also good for you, but can have a decent chunk of fat in it. Fruits are full of sugars too - which can lead to weight gain, but are still very nutritious.

I'd be offering more of healthy foods, rather than maccas and sausages and stuff.

As long as his energy levels are fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Some kids are just slender. DD is one of them. She is 6 and maybe 17 kilos. You can see her ribs and her spine.

Just to show you that sometimes ribs and stuff just stick out anyway - DD is 4.5, 20kg and 107cm tall (so far from "little"), but do you remember that picture of Mary Kate Olsen's back that started the whole, "OMG MARY KATE IS ANOREXIC!" thing? She had her ribs and spine showing through her skin. DD is the same - even though she's heavier set.

My son also has his ribs and spine sticking out, moreso when he is sitting. I always wonder if he is healthy too but he also eats like a piglet and he has lots of energy! I know that dh was a skinny kid so Im thinking that its just how he is and there is nothing I can really do..

pep, coop is like that. he eats lots but he is a snacker instead of eat 3 full meals which is fine with me. as long as coop has one decent meal a day, i am happy as i know he will just snack.

M looks healthy as well esp with the recent pics i have seen of him.

hehehe Thanks. He has always been a snacker but will eat 3 meals also lol
