View Full Version : Toddler beds worth it?
I'm planning ahead for ds and heading into a bed.
Is it better for him to go to a toddler bed first or is a normal sized bed against the wall with a safety gate ok?
Ds likes his freedom, and I feel that he is going to outgrow his cot very soon. :smiliedance:

Personally DF and I are heading straight for a single bed, we thought about a toddler bed but thought that whats the point? We will end up having to get a single bed eventually when she outgrows the toddler bed, so it's really a waste of money.

i think they are great if you get ones that convert from a cot then ts value for money, or if you need the space because you will get a few more years out of it , but if you already have the cot and you have the room , id just go straight to a single bed
I took one side off the cot and will use that til he outgrows it.

My 3 year old Little man wanted out of the cot ,
way early he was like Houdini (http://www.apl.org/history/houdini/biography.html)
so we got him a
Toy Story bed (http://www.pricerighthome.com/images/uploads/buzz_delta_bed1.jpg) he Loves those movies ,
and he Loves he's bed
he's had the bed for 2 years ,
but now we are thinking of getting a Big bed :D.

Well I am 5ft2 and can sleep in DS' toddler bed so I can't imagine it will be anytime soon I will need to buy a single bed for him and we planned by the time that he was due for a new bed to have a sibling to fill the empty bed.
Whether they are worth it really depends on the individual and how you plan on using it. If you buy a convertible one but plan on replacing it by the time they are three I would say no they aren't worth it. However if you plan on keeping them in it until they are 5 or 6 I think they are a great inbetween step
We do have a convertible cot, but it is really high even on the lowest mattress settings but he such a wriggle worm he fell out first time (luckily I had put pillows and blankets on the floor just in case! :smiliedance:) Anyway, I bought a safety gate and a stool and he can't get around it to get out. But he wants to be a big boy.. so what can i do?? :ecomcity:
We got DD an extendable toddler bed from Ikea. It is the same width as a standard single bed but can be shortened to the length of a cot/toddler bed.
This is the bed (http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S59847515) we got DD.
It has 3 lengths it can be set to so it isn't a huge intimidating bed for her (she started in it at 15 months because she was a cot escape artist). It's also lower than a standard single bed so she can easily get in and out of it herself without the need for a step.

Our twins were monkeys and only 11mths old when they needed to move from their cots. So, for us toddler beds were worth it. They were easier for them, saved on space and also meant we got some more use out of their cute cot sheets and blankets. We didn't get them single beds until their 5th birthday so we really got some use out of them as well.

We have just put DS into a toddler bed about 2 weeks ago, and so far it has been fantastic. He moves around a lot when he is sleeping, and has fallen out a few times, luckily it is so close to the ground that it doesn't matter. So I would say the toddler bed is fantastic for DS, it is prolly helping him preserve some brain cells lol

we have just bought DD a toddler bed :) she is 16 months old now & will be 19 months when the new baby is here. We opted for a toddler bed because it will be easier for her to get in & out then a big single bed. She moves a lot in her sleep so we have opted for one with the longer side rails

We recently bought a toddler bed for DD because we have a new baby due in a few weeks that will need the cot. We didn't want to put her in a big bed because she is only 14 months and it seemed a bit daunting. But the toddler bed has been a disaster- she HATES it and still wants to be in the cot :hissy: She is so hysterical when we try to put her in it. So we may end up buying another cheap cot for her, and waiting until she is older to move her into the toddler bed.
I think if you are planning on using it for more than one child you will get your moneys worth. They aren't very expensive (ours was only about $150 from Big W) and you can use the cot mattress and all the same bedding you have for the cot.
We are probably going to wait until she is over 2 before trying the toddler bed again and plan on her using it for a couple of years. By which time, #3 will be ready to move into it and will get a couple of years out of it as well :)
So all that to say, if you don't want a big bed for your DS then I think a toddler bed is the way to go
DD is nearly 14 months old and she moved into a single bed yesterday. She is on the 125th percentile for her height so we decided against a toddler bed as we figured she wouldn't be in it very long. The single bed has three height settings so at the moment it is only 30cm off the ground. She has a bed rail on it and we bought a safety gate for her room so she couldn't wander the house if she got out of bed during the night.

We bought DD a King Size SIngle bed when she was 20 months old as we were expecting #2. SHe was so tiny in it - but we put it up against the wall and got a rail for it. Once I added up the cost of linen for a toddler bed plus the bed for 12 months use - it just wasnt worth it. DD is now over 3 and she looks the right size in the bed :)
DS is 15 months and we are thinking about putting him into a bed at the same age we put DD into one. She settled in so well and we never looked back :)

A toddler bed has been worth every cent for DD2 ... mainly because she would never sleep in a cot, so was moved to a toddler bed very early (with a bed rail on the little gap) and she loves it. She's 19 months now and I'd say she'll be in it for ages yet.
ETA: DD2 is very little/short for her age, so she won't grow out of the toddler bed anytime soon.
Iv always said they were pointless...
however, DS2 is getting one for his 2nd birthday in a few weeks time!!
He has a small room, so we did it for the space mainly (there is enough room for a big bed, but why make it cramped before i need too :D) and hes soooo attached to his cot that i think hes going to need a long transition from cot to bed. so i can have both cot and toddler bed in his room (could fit a cot and normal single bed in his room) so he can transition at his own pace.
I also know that im going to get years of use out of it due to having #3 on the way, and planning one more bub after.

Wouldn't even bother with the safety rail. At 18 months he should be able to stay in bed most of the time and there is only so much damage he can do to himself falling from a low single bed:D
