My little one had an episode at 3 weeks where she stopped breathing after choking on vomit an hour after a feed in the middle of the night. she was diagnosed with Reflux and had 3 days in hospital. she is now on losec. She is now 10 weeks old, and after nearly losing sanity from her tummy upsets where she will be in a lot of pain tring to shift the wind though her system, and trying a lot of other things. My hubby sent me off to bed last night after a couple of nice glass of wine, and looked after our little one though the night with bottle formular, and didn't have a problem. No tring to settle her for up to 2 hours in the wee hours of the morning, Just 3 simple feeds and followed by sleep. And then What happens when I get up this morning and give her a breast, She goes back into fits of pain, kicking and crying and lashing out with her hands. doesn't that make you feel good.
So now I am looking at how to ween her off me and onto a bottle.:banghead:
what are you thoughts
Hi I am a bottle feeder from the start so I probably coudlt give you any adv ice for weening, but if having the breast is causing that much discomfort for bubs maybe just put her straight on the bottle, but maybe someone with more experience would be abloe to give accurate advice. I just wanted to send a few hugs your way :hugs: :hugs: and say good luck and hope it all goes smoothly and she gets better ...

What sort of things have you cut out of your diet? Because I know when DD was colicky, I tried all the "usual" stuff, but it turned out that it was tomatoes that was doing it to her! When I stopped eating tomatoes and tomato products, the colic disappeared!! It's worth a try - if you're already paying for losec, wouldn't it be great to be able to feed her free breast milk if it's at all possible. Good luck - hey the ABA might be able to point you in the direction of a Lactation Consultant who specialises in this particular area?

What the Queen said. If you want to continue to BF, call the ABA - they are a wealth of information, and may be able to give you the right advice. If it is bad wind, your diet may be a factor and it may be easy to change.

I'd second the tomato thing I noticed she really bad when I had pasta sauce the other day so I cut out tomatoes and things not perfect but hse definitely bit better and not had the violent night of reflux we had that night again...I am still hanging in there with breast milk as they say breast is best and formula has its own set of problems...makes sense to be a diet thing...

Thank you for your replies. I have cut out tomatoes and fruit, and other things like capsicum and the likes And it still is a problem. I can eat the same foods for 3 days and on the 3rd day it's back with all the problems. I think the longest we went was 2 days with just minor complaints. But it seems to be one good night then bad day, or sreaming for 2 hours before bed at night then have a good night. I just don't know what else to do but try one boob and one bottle and try to get a bit of peiceful time.

r u or your hubby allergic to anything? I had to give up dairy & gluten while feeding and then discovered soy was also bad. It's hard work piecing the puzzle together. If your bub improved on normal formula it doesn't seem dairy is a problem though.

I have tried the no dairy. that doesn't seem to be the problem. I have given her a bottle and breast since this morning and now doesn't seem to have a problem. It just seems to be so irratic.

Hi,
Was the formula last night the first formula you have given?
Babies with GERD (Gastroesophogeal refulx sydrome) are known to be better off in the long run if Breastfeeding continues, you may have some relief from the cramps now, only due to the difficulty of digesting the cows milk protien. But once her body manages to work that out she will be back to cramps and crying again. I would go and talk to a Paed who specialises in the condition you have been perscribed Losec for and discuss why your baby has pain and what you can do to help for the long term.

Thank you G.
It's not the first time she has had formular. But I think I will see someone about the pain. I just don't think it's fair on her. And I need keep my sanity.

Hi again,
You can do a search "GERD" + Breast or Forumula feeding" in Google and you will come up with loads of information to give you ideas before you get to the Paed. There have been some topics before on HB re GERD also.
I would stop the formula ( I always say that) as it will make things worse for bub in the long run.

not sure if you tried but I today used gripe water 10 minutes before her feed and apart froma minor puke and a little bit of trapped wind which I squeezed out holding her on my hip Matilda was happy and fine and now sleeping like a baby! but will give it a few days to see if this is the cure...we have been using a bit of panadol at night for extreme pain...but if the combi of formula and breast working stick with that at least she getting some breast milk thats what matters!!

thanks for your comments. I have decided to do the breast at least 90% of the time. And keep reading and trying other things. This is the first time in the forum and have found it a wealth of info.
p.s gripe water was the first thing that we tried. but onlyas she needed it not before a feed. so i might try that again.
