Hi there,

I'm new here, but I had to vent and find out other's experiences at the Royal Women's Hospital in Brissy.

I'm 23 weeks pregnant, and just found out today that I wouldn't be able to go to antenatal classes at the hospital because they can't meet demand!

A little background: I found out quite late that I was pregnant, my periods are irregular and I didn't get any morning sickness and we'd been trying for a couple of years to get pregnant without any success. In the end I was 12 weeks gone before the pregnancy was confirmed.

From the start, my pregnancy has been great, but my dealings with the hospital have been less than great. First of all when I first rang to book into the hospital, all I got was a recorded message telling me to leave my details and they would get back to me in the next 4 weeks.

I did get a reply within 2 weeks, but again it went wrong. I sent back my forms to go to the booking-in clinic, and go to antenatal classes, but I didn't hear back after a couple of weeks, so I rang the hospital .... several times .... eventually I got to speak to a real person who was unable to tell me if I was in the system, or if they had got my details. Luckily I kept pestering to find out my midwife's appointment, and they eventually gave me details over the phone, (lucky for me because the letter they sent me went to the wrong address). I easily could have missed my first hospital appointment and would not have known until I was nearly 20 weeks. The booking in system was totally dehumanising and I felt completely out of the loop - not a good when the system's stated aim is to be caring, compassionate and assist team-building.

The booking-in appointment with the midwife went well - she was very helpful and kind.

Then we had the 20 week ultrasound. We brought along a video tape and CD, just in case we could record the US - friends had said that it was common thing to do. Also, after having an earlier US at a private clinic to confirm the baby's due date early in the pregnancy, we had a CDRom of still images from week 12.

The US technician was bossy and got my husband offside straight away - and he's a very easy going guy - he was still seething about the experience late that night. She definitely was not in a good mood to start with, but she seemed to relax as the US went on. We asked about getting a video tape of the US, but she said no, with no explanation, despite a video recorder being in plain view under the monitor in a newly built hospital wing (The building only been around for a year or two). We didn't bother asking about the CD. We did get some still images which were very nice.

Today I got a phone call saying that the letter they'd sent me about the lack of antenatal classes had been returned - they'd sent it to the wrong address - AGAIN! I was gobsmacked ... I'm now wondering what I've gotten myself into. I'm trying to stay positive ... I couldn't get a spot at the Birth Centre. I'd love the option of trying a water birth, - the hospital has spent heaps on a new building and facilities including birthing baths which it has banned women from using, even for pain relief. I am so disappointed. I know it won't do me or the baby any good to get upset, so I'll focus on what things I can do - I did get a place with the Phoenix midwives group at the hospital - it's kind of like a compromise the hospital has come up with to appease women who weren't able to get into the Birth Centre - so I'm hoping they will be helpful and supportive and assist me to have as natural a birth as possible.

Hopefully my case is a rare one - maybe I've just been unlucky. But I'm curious to hear from others about their experiences with the RB&WH. Needless to say, I'll be sending in a letter to the Qld Review of Maternity services.

Sorry for raving on.

For anyone interested in participating in the review of maternity services in Qld, submissions close Monday November 1 2004, read on ..

Hi BJelly
Just wanted to give a quick reply - we are due with our 2nd baby in may-June next yr. We were living in Wagga, NSW with the birth of our first baby a yr ago. We went through Wagga Base which was just a fantastic experience, even though I ended up having to have a C/S.
I have only heard negative stories about Royal Brisbane for birthing, so our GP here faxed a referral through to Mater Women's Public (standard practice to get first appointment) 2 week's ago - Still haven't heard from them but they said to call after a fortnight if this is the case and it is actually 2 weeks tomorrow. I have friends that have had babies here although it was in the private section, so will be interesting to see what happens. I hope things get better for you - that is shocking to be making you stress so much about what should be such a fantastic experience. Maybe it is not too late for you to be looking at other hospitals? If you are interested the number for the Mater is 07 3840 8330. Good luck!

Thanks Rosie, best of luck with your new upcoming arrival!

I'm seriously thinking of doing something. I'm not sure what yet. My husband is supportive and has even said he's happy for us to go private, even tho we don't have medical insurance. I've started asking friends to find out about other hospitals in my area. I've got my first Obstetrician's appointment at the hospital tomorrow, so I'll see if I'm happy with the vibe and the answers to my many questions about the type of birth I can expect.

Thanks again!

Hi BJelly

I'm very sorry to hear about your story. On the other hand I had nothing but praise for the newly built womans section of the royal. my son was the 3rd baby born in the newly built building in 2002. I had no problems getting appointments of any kind. But I guess all good things come to an end. I have been trying for 4weeks to get an appointment (i am now 14wks) so I booked myself into the redcliffe ante natal clinic 2 days ago and I have my first booking tomorrow. Like last time we hired a Doula she was excellent more reliable than the midwives in the public hospital as they only concentrate on you and your family. My Doula stayed with me during my whole entire labour which lasted 36hours and stayed long after my son was born.

Sorry for blabbing

Shiloh :)

Hi

I had my 3 babies at Royal Brisbane and found the quality of care really good, no complaints. I was a public patient and agree the waiting times for checkups were pretty horrendous. I used to try to get the first appoinment if possible. I found the u/s department quite good but some of the sonographers were definitely better than others. I did notice that by baby 3 a few corners were being cut like everyone had to do share care unless high risk but not with respect to the care once in the hospital. It is disappointing if they are cutting down on the antenatal classes even though in my situation with c-sections I didn't really get to use much we learnt.

I had 3 caesarians and had no problems there either. The follow up was pretty good.

Two of my babies required special care and intensive care and I found these facilities were excellent and the staff very nice. I guess I felt in safe hands at this hospital as it big, new with modern facilities. The parking fees in the butterfield st carpark are horrendous however that is another story.

Just be careful if you go private without insurance that you don't end up with a large bill because you never know you could need a c-section or have a baby that requires special care so you need to be aware of the potential costs involved.

Easterlily :)

Hi Shiloh,
No way were you blabbing!
I've been thinking about approaching the Redcliffe hospital - I've heard some good stories. How do you go about finding a doula? It might be a good compromise if I can't change hospitals - also it would be great to have another support person who knows what's what. This is the first baby for both of us - so both of us are completely in the dark as to what to expect.

Hi Easterlily,
Good point about the complications etc. It wouldn't be a good start to family life having a big financial burden to cope with as well as a new baby. I'm glad to hear you've had several good experiences there - maybe things will get better.

Thanks peoples!

Hi BJelly

You can change hospitals when ever you like, that was one reasons why my partner and I chose to have a doula, depends which ones are avaliable, there fees vary from $600 up to as much as $900 for 4 visits and a hospital stay. You should shop around.
Have you thourght about shared care with your family GP then go to hospital when you go into labour? Maybe better than venturing up to the royal every fortnight to sit and wait hours for your appointment. (its not a big waiting room either)
Here is a number for you if you'd like to enquire about doulas her name is Michelle Hayward Ph: 3297 5695 her fees and charges maybe different to what I had stated
I hope that I have been of some assistance, Goodluck with the pregnancy

Hi Shiloh,
I like my GP as a person, but I lost faith in her early on in the pregnancy. I was working in a factory and asked what I needed to be careful of, and although she mentioned not getting overheated, she didn't say anything about lifting. Even when I asked her about it more specifically, she said she wouldn't lift more than 100kg, - no-one, not even a guy is expected to lift 100kg by themselves. For pregnant woment it is more like 20kg for a one off lift and no more than 10-12kg for repetitive lifting. When I went to the Midwife at the hospital I asked about being referred to GP's with more pregnancy experience, so I got a list of Shared care GP's, and she was on the list. After that I decided to go with the Phoenix midwives - it's just too hard to find a good doctor.

I'm thinking I'm sounding a bit whiny, like nothing is good enough, but I'm keen for everything to go well - I don't want anything to go wrong if I can help it - it took us ages to get pregnant, and I'm not sure if we'll get another chance- and seeing as I have never been pregnant before, I'm keen to be given good information, by people who know about the subject.

The Doula option sounds like it might work well for us. My husband is self-employed and is keen to be with me throughout the labour, but it would be great to have someone who knows about these things, who we know, and knows us to give us a hand - it would also allow him to get some rest if the labour goes on through the night or for a long time - no point in both of us staying awake for 24 hours straight- especially when he'll need to drive home at the end of it!

A quick update on my first Ob/Gyn visit at the RB&WH.

I'm still getting lost in the system. This time, they lost all record of me having my 20 weeks ultrasound scan, and even asked if I was sure I had one there!!!
Eventually they found it after the Dr said she'd have to get me up there to have another scan to check on the placement of the placenta. They had my birthyear completely wrong and had given me a new hospital ID number. Lucky for me, the scan and placenta is all good.

I also had a list of questions about what to expect in the delivery room etc. The Dr said she'd answer as best she could, but I'd be best asking the midwives at my next appointment - over a month away. I asked a few questions, but could tell she couldn't really tell me all that much, as she said herself, she only comes in if there is a problem - she didn't know the ins and outs of a normal admission.

She also suggested I join the Phoenix midwives group - I didn't understand this -because I had had to change my initial appointment to see another OB/GYN to see her purely because I'd signed up with the Phoenix midwives. She said there was nothing about it in my chart and to check with them. I did that, after the consultation and fortunately I was indeed listed as being under their care.

I ended up having to find some toilets and had a good cry out of sheer frustration. I am still getting lost in the system!!

I'm feeling a bit better now, I've found some doulas online and have emailed them. I'll feel heaps better knowing we'll have someone on our side when we go to the hospital. I've lost faith in the hospital system - I feel sorry for the Dr's and nurses working there - they are good people in a system that is busting at the seems.

I'vc also contacted the CEA, so hopefully they'll be able to give me some good information so I can make an informed decision about where to give birth.

Oops, a not so quick update after all. I keep thinking I have to be a statistical abberration, it can't be this difficult for other people. It's good knowing other people have had good experiences there - it gives me hope things will get better.

Ive heard some horror stories about the RBH, but I've had a few friends give birth in the Mater and they said it was great (even in the public section) My Doc sent through a letter to the Mater asking if i could give birth there and within a week, they had booked me in to see a midwife for my first antenatal appointment and posted a whole bunch of literature on giving birth and classes I can attend. They seem very organised. Just remember, you have to be happy with the people involved, if you dont like em, change!

There's specific threads for finding Doula's on BH, go to original index page and scroll down. They really are a great option as they should have lotsa knowledge and experience of hospy systems not to mention amazing support and wealth of info:thumbsup:
