nicholas was 10 weeks old yesterday.. hes growing so quickly.. hes around the 7kg mark and already in 00 he wasnt a big baby when he was born only 7lb 12 but hes done alot of growing.. hes not a chubby baby hes just very long.. as his dad is 6'3.. just wondering is it normal for a 10 week old baby to weigh 7kg? a girl i was talking to her baby is older then mine and is 4kg something!!!.. how big was you baby at 10 weeks old? and what size clothes were they wearing?
also i know there are many debates about when to start giving a baby solids.. but the rate my baby is growing.. is like soon he needs something else.. the bottle just dont seem to fill him up anymore.. i think all babies are different and grow differently.. so why say that they should all be 4 or 6 months before they have any solids? my mum has told me that she have me and my sister baby cereal around 3 and a half months. i dont want any no dont do that, i would just like to know if there are any mums who have started there babies on solids at an earlier age, because they were growing very fast and needed it!!
need some advice thanks!!;)

I don't weigh my bubs - I know he's growing, he's extremely healthy and alert, so I don't need to know the number. But he's 13 weeks at the moment and is in 00 and 0 clothes. So you're not alone!! Lots of people say to me that he's a big boy, so I guess maybe he's bigger than "average". But every baby is different, each is an individual.
He's feeding A LOT at the moment, so I know what you mean about "it seems like he needs more" I don't count or time feeds either, I just put him on whenever he shows hungry cues. So he's having quite a lot of breastfeeds lately - but that's fine with me. I kinda think that he must be getting lots of good stuff from me, if he's growing at a rate of knots!!! He can have extra booby whenever he wants. I'm not planning on starting solids while he's obviously doing so well on just breastmilk. :)

My DD is only 5 weeks but shes just gained 1.1kg in 2 weeks making her 4.4kg now so shes growing very fast as well.
There really is no 'normal' weight for babies though, your son sounds perfect to me! Growing nicely!
As for solids, DS was 12 weeks old when I started him on solids, he was only about 3.5kg then too as he was 9 weeks early but he was having 6-8 bottles of 240mls per day and still wanting more so even my health nurse advised me to start him on solids, he did brilliantly.
They reccommend 4-6 months (more so 6 months) becuse of allergies i'm fairly sure.
IMO its all trial and error though, if hes showing signs of readiness.. watching you eat, mouth actions for it, not filled from 'full' bottles... then give him a try. Honestly I'd wait until 3 months though, its only 2 more weeks :)
All babies are different, some are ready before others.
DD started at 16 weeks, she was 5 weeks early so thats like starting at 11 weeks... she did brilliantly as well!

my lil chub DD has just gone 9 weeks and she was 3.210kg at birth and she's now in 00 so i think at this stage it's fairly normal.? my guess cos she's my first.

Savannah does the same thing with her feeds, I just got told im overfeeding her as she has 8 feeds of 150-200mls per day and then 4-6 'topups' of 80-100mls about 30-45 mins after a 'feed' ... and she gained 550grams for two weeks running....
I think with her shes just growing through a growth spurt. Could your little boy be having a growth spurt?

yeah i hate that being told your over feeding.. its c...r...a...p! your not gonna just let your baby cry because you think they have had enough!!.. if there hungry there hungry! we dont know what they feel like!! and yes i think he may be going through a growth spurt to!!.. as theres a whole heap more clothes hes not fitting into now!! gosh even the bonds suits in 00 are getting snug!!

hopefully he settles down soon for you then!
How much is he drinking each feed, how many times a day and how much at topups? I'm sure there is a system for working out how much they're meant to drink in 24 hours on there weight.
bonds wondersuit sizing is terrible! DD1 is 13 months, 10kg and almost out of a size 2 wondersuit, at 8kg she was a size 0-1 wondersuit!

yes bonds clothes seem quite small.. i guess its the same as adult sizes.. even in ladies clothes the same size in 2 shops or different brands will be different.. (small make, big make)... i find pumpking patch clothes r huge for there sizes!!! i have a gorgeous pair of cord pants for him that are for 0-3 months.. and they still dont fit him!!
and to be honest i really dont even know how many bottles he has a day.. but i make 180mls up.. and he has no probs drinking that.. and then has a bit more maybe 30 mins to 45 mins later...
hey, my maddy was 11 weeks old today and i got her weighed a few days ago and shes 6.3kg's and shes 59cm's long... shes in 000. she weighed 8lb 9oz when she was born so she was a pretty big bubba. your boy sounds perfectly healthy, just a growing boy. maddy loves her milk too. i told the health nurses that she has up to 10 bottles a day and then they get the sh**s with me saying i overfeed her but im not going to let her scream if shes hungry.

guess when it comes down to it.. no body knows there baby better then the mum! and every baby is different and grows different.. and i wouldnt listen to nurses or docs about over feeding baby.. thats silly.. how would they like someone to take there dinner away from them and say no you have had enough!!

jenna, do you get regular check ups with your CHN or GP?
I'm afraid it is possible to overfeed your babe, and this is a risk particularly with formula fed bubs. However it's not for me to judge whether your bub is or not. There are also risks to your bub from overfeeding as with underfeeding.
Just make sure that your interpretation of hungry signs are on the mark. At 5 months it can still be difficult to know if my DD is hungry or needs something else. I tend to go on how long since her last feed, and if it is not that long ago, explore other reasons for her being unsettled first.
I agree that Mums may know their baby best, but Docs and Nurses have the experience and huge amounts of research behind their opinions (usually). Maybe try and find a balance between how you feel and what they say???

had a check up when he had his needles 2 weeks ago.. and nurse said he was beautiful and healthy and growing perfectly!... his not over weight and i dont over feed him.. his dad is really tall.. so hes going to be a very big boy.. (length wise, and grow fast..)
i dont just give him bottle everytime he cries.. and i do explore other reasons first... when he cries its usually because he has pains or hes over tired.. i have worked out the difference in between pain cries and hunger cries.. and even when i think it may be hungry pains again.. i still try and burp him and settle him b4 giving him any more bottles..!!!
on the back of the formula it says from 2-4 months 180mls..
but then it also says, your baby may need more or less then that ammount!!

Your not alone......Oliver was only 6.1kg, but was 65cm long at 12 weeks. The CHN said he was the lenght of an average 5 and a half month old!
As for solids.....I'm starting to give Oliver solids from 4 months....just tastings. But I did speak to the CHN about it first. I offered him Farex at 13 weeks (and he LOVED it, gobbling it up off the spoon), but it upset his tummy, so I'm waiting and will try to offer it again.
The old recommendations for starting solids have been from 6weeks to 12 months! Currently they are 6 months, and before this they were 4 months. Evidently the 6 months is based on PHYSICAL rediness of the child. The gut and intestines are more mature then and handel food better. Also milk starts to not provide enough for the baby.
Every child is different though. You just have to offer small amounts and watch for reactions. If Oliver gets an upset tummy at 4 months....I'll wait another few weeks and try again....
Dont push it if your bubba seems to not take well....just wait a few weeks and try again! :)

Hey Jenna I think your bub sounds like a healthy little bubba :smiliedance: I wouldnt worry to much once they get a bit more mobile the weight gain slows down  I started giving my little girl solids at 4 months ans she loved it :D dakota was 4 kg when she was born and she gained alot of weight until 5 months and then she started crawling at 5 1/2 months and she has been very active since and she is not gaining much weight at all. All Babies grow different and I would not worry about overfeeding him :smiliedance:
I know that when I was a little bub my mum used to put farex in my bottle. The doctor told her to do it as it made the milk a bit heavier and would fill me up .. (i was a hungry girl back then . .and still am . .hehe). . but I agree with the girls that trial and error are the only way. And that mum knows best.
I went to the baby clinic this week and got told that I have no right feeding my little girl solids. I almost hit the roof. I think its more a case of she has no right to tell me I cant. Im not some idiot thats going to force feed her if she doesnt want it but she gobbles it right up with no troubles and has since she was just over 3 mths. Does anyone else have ytrouble with the ladies at the clinic?

I wouldn't worry about the weight. My girl was 7 13 born and now is well over 6kg and quite solid and in 00. And this is all with bad reflux, the silent type not so much the vomiting type.
well my bub is long to so he always weighs more than a smaller baby but he is not fat! he grows outta his clothes fast! i gave him rice ceral ans rusks at 4months under the advice of child health care nurse, becoz he was bigger he was getting more hungry! his growing has now slowed down alot!

ds at birth 3.88kg 55cm long, ds at 6 month was(last week), 9.15kg and 72.5cm long, has been in 0 since just b4 4 months and is growing out of them fast! he was fully breast fed until 6 months. when he had days he was more hungry, i fed him more, when he was having growth spurts i fed him evry hour just about! at 10 weeks ds was about :7kg, 65cm... his growth has slowed down alot in the last 2 months, but is still going upwards, unless it plataued or dropped i wasnt going to start him on solids as he was big n healthy enough  . saying that, each to there own, its just what i felt was right for my son

Jennababe- Ariene is also growing well and at 12 weeks is 6.6 kilo's.
Because she is going so well (on breastmilk) I don't intend to start solids at an age younger then the recommended 6 months (World Health Organisation).
I wouldn't worry about starting solids early- It's the kind of thing people do to help their babies grow when they aren't putting on weight, isn't it? I'm not sure if I understand correctly, but if a baby is doing so well on b/m or formula, then why is it necessary to change and add food? Isn't this a good reason not to start solids for a while? Anyway, each to their own, all we can do is follow our intuition and make decisions that are as educated as possible, hey.

heee.. im still waiting for my DD to grow into 00 clothes and she is almost 5months (weighs just over 6kg/60cm) i have started her on foods now because i would like her put on some size.. like the other mums said do what feels right to you. i have told my clinic and gp that im feeding her even tho she is was only 4months when i started to give her food and no-one said i couldnt... she still only drinks 150mls each feed, every 3-4hours.
keep the advice of others in your head and use it as a guide, every person has different ideas and advice.
goodluck
I think this thread is a perfect example of 'every baby is different'. I wasnt going to start ds on solids till he was six months, but he wasnt getting enough out of the bottle so started him on just after he was four months and he loves it and has settled down a lot. I would recommend starting on the farex stuff when you want cuz it basically tastes the same as formula or bm. but i only recommend that cuz it worked for me. Also i think the main thing is that bub can keep their head up properly cuz there could be problems with swallowing? But i wouldnt worry about him growing, he sounds like he is a big healthy baby :D And if the Dr's have no problem with it, then i wouldnt worry.

i have taken everyones advice.. although i did think a few comments were very rude!!!! anyway im going to hold him off.. and put him on farex around 3 and a half to 4 months..
i have a child and youth health nurse coming out today so ill speak to her about a few things!!...
i dont think my bubba is over weight he is a very healthy growing boy!!!
i do like what one user said, if hes growing and doing so well on the formula then why would i want to put him on solids.. that is a very good point!! sometimes i just think god he does have alot of bottles!!!!...
anyway thanks for everyones advice!!!!!!..
and yes every little one is very different!

well just had the child and youth health nurse out!.. have decided to wait til 4 months until nick has some baby ceral.. she said hes doing great and growing very well!!
going by that chart she said hes 25% bigger then the average baby at 11 weeks!!!
hes now 6.6kg
62.5cm long
and HC is now 41.5cm
she said that his size is prefect for his length!!!
looks like hes going to be a giant man when hes older!!!
gosh babies grow so fast.. hes almost doubled what he weighed when he was born!!!

gosh even the bonds suits in 00 are getting snug!!
I always found I had to go up a size with the bonds suits than what he was. At 8lb8oz (when born), he was a 0000 in normal clothes but a 000 in wondersuits already.
Don't worry about the weight too much. I mean what is the other option? Not feeding him  I have a chubby little man, he is now 10kg and 73.5cm at nearly 8 months old. He is way above for height, and a little above average for weight. I use the 'personal health record' charts to just keep and eye on his progress, but at the end of the day........ I am happy that he is well fed, well loved and extremely healthy.
As for solids? We waited until 6 months as he didn't show any signs of needing any more. If he did, then we would have I suppose. Each bub is an individual, so don't worry about what anyone but your CHN has to say. They will guide you the best.
Hope this helps!

Hey my baby boy was bor 10lb 10oz and is 10wks old tomorrow... he weighs 7.6kg and has just started wearing 00.. he has 4-5 feeds a day of 150-180ml per feed and sleeps for 10-12hrs each night :) He's doing juusstt fine :) lovin it!! I don't think you have anything to worry about!! Some babies (particulary boys) are just big bubs!! enjoy it.. i love chubba bubbas!! My bub isn't fat, looks tiny but just long and solid! :) Your bub is fine... at this age, weight doesn't mean much at all, they all thin out once walking and crawling

25-08-2009, 22:15
DS was 4kg at birth, and at 9wks was 5.1kg... and in OOO clothes.
His last checkup at 4 mths old was 5.5kg, head 40cm, length 66cm, and he's wearing 00's. This is partly to accommodate his nappies though.
As for the overfeeding/weight comments.... it was explained to me once that a baby's appetite was relative to it's size... so if your bubs is the size of, say, a 1yr old, it will have the appetite and calorie needs of a 1yr old, even if that baby is only 6 months old.
So... a larger baby might be large because they are getting fed so much, but they might also be needing that extra food to fuel their extra size.
Oh,and hunger is often confused with thirst. It's hotter weather right now (where I live anyways) so maybe you could top up with a bit of water rather than formula if he's still asking for more 45 mins after a feed?
Sorry if I've repeated what's already been said... I didn't read all the comments before posting.
