My 4 and a half month old has had no relief from Zantac or Gaviscon, he started drinking better on Losec but could not sleep at all so we have just been told to discontinue that. I know there are other PPI type meds available but do they have different side effects does anyone know of other meds we could ask for that we could try? The only thing that relieves him currently is Mylanta and I don't want to have to rely on this as an every day thing.

Hi
I don't know of any other meds that will help, our DD went well with Zantac. She didn't tolerate Losec and we never tried Gaviscon.
The only other thing I can think of is thickening his formula if he is formula fed. The chemist generally sells thickener which you can add to the formula, which helps by keeping more if it in the stomach. We thickened feeds until bub was 7 months old, and then we came off everything gradually and :fingerscrossed: we've never looked back.
Hope you find something that helps soon...
My suggestion is have you ever tried Marina Infant Mixture it is available from your local chemist costs about $14.00 and can be given to newborns and through to 2 years of age it is all natural and works for Reflux, Colic and wind it is excellent my baby used to scream in pain and this magical mixture worked for me, no more restless nights and u can guarantee that it will not hurt your bubby as it is an all natural formula. It was actually on ACA ages ago as the miracle cure :) good luck hun

We use the Marina Infant mixture and it seems to soothe him for a while but not long enough. Thickening also doesn't seem to do much as he is not a chucker it is really only the acid burning that we need to change. Do you guys know anything about Zoton or anyone who has used it compared to Losec?

do you crush the losec or get it in a suspension. my 10 week old has been on it since 3 weeks old. I do use mylanta when her attacks are bad and have even used panadol. last night my hubby looked after her to give me a night off and she seemed better on formular rather than breast, now I am thinking of weening her. But it is a trail and error thing.

i dissolved the losec in water as i was told the suspension isn't quite as potent. You may find weaning helps some as reflux is worsened by food sensitivties (foods come through breast milk). Unfortunately our bub us sensitive to every formula too, we now use prescription formula called Neocate.

I get the losec in the suspension, and it smells like bubblegum, Riley isfine with it like that. but she did have it disolved in water and did not take to that at all. The chemist that I get it from in brisbane suspendes it themselves in there lab on the premises.

Hi, we are reflux veterans here. Our 4 kids have all had it. If your losec is not working, I would check:
A) that the dose is correct for the baby's weight. As your baby grows they may need more. Ask your doctor. We have had 2 doctors disagree totally about dosage, so it may be worth getting a second opinion. And that you are dissolving the tablet thoroughly and not crushing it.
B) You said your baby is on Neocate. One of ours was on that and wouldn't drink it either. It is very thin and can make the reflux worse, it tastes awful too. Did you try soy? Our DS was fine on soy after we took him off neocate. However, many babies are soy intolerant too, so you may not have any luck there. We also tried at one point putting a drop of vanilla essence in the Neocate to make it taste nicer. Didn't work for us though....
C) Be wary of thickening formulas as it can make them constipated. The blockage then can make the reflux worse again as food takes too long to move through the system.
D) Can you get a referral to a paediatric gastro specialist? They are not easy to get to but worth it I think.
Good luck. Remember, your baby is entitled to help. Pester your paed if you are worried until they have done everything they can. Don't give up. They need you to keep up the battle for them.

I put my bubs on the karicare de-lac and the major vomiting and constipation went away within days, as for her reflux well it settled down too but still need to give her some marina mixture now and then and i swear by that stuff i love it.:)

We're seeing and esophegal specialist on Friday. Bubs doesn't mind the tast of Neocate because he's been on it for soooo long. We're currently surviving using Infant Gaviscon, Mylanta and small amounts of Zantac. Any more than 1ml twice a day and that causes him bad wind too. We tried another drug called Zoton and unfortunately that gave him terrible stomach aches and runny mucousy poohs. Reflux ain't at all easy is it. I'm over the moon when he naps for 30mins and if he wakes up four times a night it's good.

DS has severe reflux and we have had trouble since birth. Gaviscon and Zantac didnt work for him. He wasnt always a big chucker, but would convulse almost when the acid would come up (mainly at night when he was trying to go to sleep). My peads doc has put him on a couple of feeds of s26 ar and he is dramatically improving. I can see a massive difference between his breastfeeds and his formula feeds.
He didnt get consitated with it tho, but my doc yesterday have me a tip to help him digest quicker. Put bub on thier right side, as the pressure on their stomach will push things through. DS also has colic. Doc has recommended him to be placed on his belly as much as possible, as the pressure on it relieves his pain. So if you put your bub on formula and have trouble, hopefully these things can help.
